999 Sidestands

  1. I believe it is common for 749s/999s to lean more than one might expect on their side stands and mine is certainly no exception.
There is a thread on side stands on the Multistrada forum at the moment and it seems to be quite possible for the pivot bolts to shear without the rider being aware, apart from a more pronounced lean than usual.
Has anyone heard of this with the 749/999 I wonder??

  2. I recently had to have my 999 side stand built up through a welding process due to excess wear, which culminated in a rather worrying lean angle in certain situations. Pro-Twin's did the necessary for me.

Can't comment on the MS situation but interested as I am considering a purchase.

  3. Yes the foot of mine does look pretty worn.
A nylon pad bonded on could work, if it could be made to stick...

  4. I'm told that the bolt shearing scenario is common for 749/999 models.

In my case, the bracket mount for the sidestand ate itself - completely bent itself out of shape - and needed replacing. I hinted to the dealer that his mechanics' practice of pivoting the bike on its sidestand probably contributed to the issue but predictably, my comments fell on stone-deaf ears.

  5. Ducati John modded mine by drilling and tapping the stand where it rests against the bracket. A bolt inserted into the threaded hole allows washers to adjust the lean angle. Now my bike stands more upright.

  6. Good point!
My bracket seems ok and there is some play between bracket and stand but it's not enormous.
The Multistrada guys are banding together to get some good quality bolts made up by an engineering firm, using best material for the job.
No doubt they would also make a batch of 999 ones - if they are needed...

  7. Does the bolt head contact the stand or just the washers?

  8. The bolt head. The washers act as spacers.

  9. Must have had quite a lot of play then...
I'm wondering if a judiciously placed cable tie might have a similar effect.

  10. On my 2006 749 I had the side stand mount bracket shear in half - luckily I saw the bike as it started to fall over and jumped under in time to save it from hitting the floor.

When are you due out of hospital??

  12. No Ducati's must be allowed to fall over...ever! I am not sure there is a human healing process for this.

  13. Having recently saved my 750Sie from a 0 mph spill at the expense of my body, I can only vouch for this issue :( :)

  15. Once my back had recovered, I was delighted! :D

I can always get a new spine but where can I find fairings for my bike these days? ;)

  16. I'm pretty sure I've seen somewhere a shaped alloy plate that you can bolt onto the underneath of the stand to raise its angle a little, obviously the stand will need drilling and tapping but I think that would be a small price to pay for a bit more peace of mind...i'm also worried about the lean angle on mine,i nearly swore at the MOT tester recently when he was pivoting the bike on the stand and at the same time laughing that he had had experience of Ducati stands sheering in the past!

  17. 3/4 inch plank of wood in garage and an ice hockey puc under the stand when out and about - both put bike much more upright taking the strain off of the stand.

  18. i myself have two asylum seekers who sleep ether side of the bike just in case it falls off its stand :pompus:

  19. Mine went at exactly the same place. It starting falling so slowly that it put pressure on the stand, which bent and now leans further forward than it is meant to (after having the crack welded).

  20. :/
