Hi all, Just been sent a pair of SL floating iron discs for my inspection/autopsy/possible fitment to my carby? Rotors themselves are good, there is slight radial movement (Approx 1-1.5mm?), side-to-side quite a bit too? Could be cured by adding another shim/washer underneath? (M14 x 0.5mm?) How much movement is "Excessive"? I understand they have to be free to move to work properly, im thinking side-to-side is good, rotational movement bad? Does anyone have a new disc they could measure the "float" on for me please? Has anyone here managed to machine the bobbin holes bigger and fit oversize bobbins? Have found these: https://tpoparts.com/cat093/index.ph...product_id=171 But are in the States, anybody point out where I may get some in the UK please? Any info appreciated!
 Just managed to shut the clutch up, two front shang-a-dangs doing their thing out the front will further enhance my "wtf was that noise" phobia
both my sets of dry wheels have flating discs, both jangle and both move more than yours, Relax, enjoy the tinklng sounds.
I have full floating cast iron discs on one of the DD bikes and they rattle and jangle alarmingly! It's all part of the character. One word of caution though, please inspect the discs for hairline cracks. When they go...it's catastrophic!
Will have another look! Google does give Urban Legend of the cast disc's "exploding" !!? Are these wider than the standard stainless disc's? 5mm vs 4mm etc? Look to be...
It's not a myth, we were racing at Pembrey a couple of years ago when Dallas's disc broke as he approached the hairpin. The bike ended up in 3 parts, Dallas almost lost his hand and he had black eyes from INSIDE his helmet!..... I now check them every time we go out! :frown:
I had them on my 748R and Harley XR1200 race bike, more rattles than a rattlesnake! always sounded like something was broken, especially pushing the bike oout of the garage.
Standing in the rain full cast bleed rust too. Has anyone here managed to machine the bobbin holes bigger and fit oversize bobbins sl /sp floating discs are getting rare don`t damage them get some later ones or after market. you could sell them for good money.
yes they rattle- a lot! Have a look on the Bimota Forum, there's posts on there, one guy 'Oily' [not me!] has used BMW bobbins. When my YB11 (which used the same discs as the SL) had done 600 mile from new they were as loose as the 21k ones on my SL. Find a sympathetic MOT tester, or at least someone who understands how they are from new. other wise you'll end up with a fail. The problem is the alloy carrier wears, you then get radial play. I have one sitting on my desk and the idea was to have some over size ones made. Havne't got around to it. Also the crinkle washers loose their 'crinkle' after a few 100 miles and heat cycles and the whole lot goes a loose, which compounds the wear. yes, everytime you go over a bump in the road they will rattle!
Crikey... I found a link yesterday where an ex-Ducati employee was making 7000series alloy centres for these as the standard soft 6061 centres suffered from premature wear issues. Undecided as to whether they would be a good idea for the road. :frown:
All the sps bikes were delivered with them, no issues there with he road, just keep an eye out; tyres CHECK oil CHECK discs CHECK
I've got them on the 900 & the 916 and been running them for years with no problems. The fun part is explaining the noise to the MOT guy
