Gave bike its annual service yesterday Changed oil, oil filter and cam belts Everything was a doddle except the oil filter, as usual the screwdriver driven thru the filter to get purchase to get it off worked Cam belts were easier this time than last courtesty of copper slip used on all hardware last time
Had to smile, I too had a similar mare of a job doing this years oil change. Now switched to K&N so will see what next years oil change is like.
did filter and oil change yesterday only problem was I had was I couldnt remember where I had put my spare sump plug washer
Because Ducati decided to bury the oil filter in a hole under the engine, instead of sticking it on the front as other manufacturers do? Aesthetics over practicality I guess.
I bought from a tacky market stall a ratchet strap type oil filter removal tool for about a pound. It works brilliant. Because its a thin material strap it can be fed into the tight gap between filter and engine casing. Its a real cheesy bit of kit but works every time.
Solution! I pop over and change your filter while you change my belts.. You don't even need to give me any cash
The Guzzi Le Mans has the filter inside the sump...........I can't recall how many M6 bolts have to be taken out to drop the sump, but you soon learn to drain the oil from the sump first......... As for the Ducati, I have the proper OEM filter removal tool, but even on the OEM filters it still slips.........gave up with them and switched to K&N........the nut thingy on the bottom of them makes it worth the extra few quid.
Absolutely, K&N is a no-brainer IMO, especially after the trauma I had removing the filter from my Monster engine which ended up me making a special extraction tool after failing with all the usual tricks (including screwdriver through the casing). Also the K&Ns cost me less than genuine Ducati filters, at least at Ducati dealer prices. As for the internal Guzzi filter (18 x M6 bolts BTW), I have fitted an extended sump that has the filter on the outside/underneath (much like a Ducati) and, whilst for now I've got the UFI filter that came with it, I'll probably use a K&N on that too...
