So I removed my canister from my bike. And as a true testament of Termignoni quality it has cracks in it, 4 in total. No big deal, I'll just get it welded, and in due time it will be replaced by a full system. For the moment I'm just going to repack it. The questions I have are: - Which side do you need to open up ( remove rivets etc. ) At the front where the pipes enter the canister, or at the back where the gas flows out, or both? - What material do I need? and how much of it? A mat or just wool? - What type of bonding material is used to seal the endcaps which are riveted on?
I did it on an open can from a full system. It is a bastard job. Both ends need to be removed. You cannot use a roll of wadding like on a normal round/oval can. The box is injection filled with about a bin liner's worth of continuous fibreglass tape ( I know, I pulled it all out!). Getting it back in is a pig of a job. My advice - don't do it unless you REALLY have to!
Can is virtually empty i guess. I have a brand new one here and by knocking on it it makes a very hollow sound. The new one sounds full. Also the canister is fairly discoloured from the heat so I it's fair to say that the canister has been burned empty. Would it make any difference if you would stuff it with the wool stuff, or a mat? I read your topic from when you did it.... interesting.....
Have a look at Acoustafil http://www.thermalvelocity.co.uk/Silencer-Packing/Acousta-Fil®-PTX----800ºC/p-117-425/
I found this instruction online for repacking it with the Ducati Performance Sound deadening kit for racing silencer (96112603B) - 749 & 999 Ducati Performance - Sound-deadening kit for racing silencer (96112603B) - 749 & 999 - 2ri.de I however don't know if this kit is still available.
Update: So I dropped it off at the welder. for 30 euros he's going to weld all the cracks. We opened it there. Rivets were a pain to get drilled out but we succeeded fairly quick. The end cap was also siliconed to the canister so we had to beat it out with a chisel on the edge. Finally the can was opened. And I was thinking to myself I should have listened to RickyX. I used my left hand to pluck out all the fiber glass it was not one piece but heaps and heaps of fibre glass. My left hand still itches. The material looked fairly good so in the end I wouldn't have to replace it. But when your canister is cracked better to inspect it. Now the question remains which material and how much.
Tighter its packed the better imo. Make sure you use stainless steel rivets to re-attach the end part as alloy ones will melt .
Got it back today from the welder.... Now I'm searching for right material to pack it. Also I'm on the fence wether to remove the steel wool and sleeve around the perforated pipes, as per Ducati's manual. Or just leave it in.
No, a fine gauze type mesh. Guaranteed to induce lots of micro scratches in your arms and hands so the glass fibre strands can REALLY start to do their nasty work and irritate one's skin to buggery!
Layer of steel wool and a sort of cloth sleeve around it. You can see it on page 2 at the bottom. It states: Some silencer versions have coiled or loose meshing inside. Remove any residue of meshing. Do they refer to the cloth sleeve or the entire steel wool + sleeve? Ducati Performance - Sound-deadening kit for racing silencer (96112603B) - 749 & 999 - 2ri.de
. I've done this horrendous job of re packing as I thought my silencer was too loud. Pulled out about a dustbin full of fibreglass wadding, which turned out to be in perfect condition, so my efforts were in vain. Spent ages ramming the stuff back in, only to find out it was just as loud, or possibly louder, than before. This was a few years ago now but I recall finding out that ramming the wadding in tightly is not the best technique! I used alloy rivets and never had any problems with them melting.
Why would you stuff it with exactly the same material and expect it to be any quieter. From what I see the kit which they sold was named sound deadening kit, used a entirely different kind of damper wool. What I removed from my silencer I can pretty much asure you that it's impossible to fill it back up the way the kit is administered to the canister.
As per Ducati manual I removed the sleeves from the exhaust. Some sort of mesh with thin layer of steel wool in them. They look like this: The question now is can I leave them out as per the manual? Won't all the wool blow out the back through the perforated pipes?
That seems altogether possible. Maybe you could wrap the perforated pipe with fine wire to act like the mesh. Not so much an end can, more a can of worms methinks...
