I had a 1991 Yamaha FZR1000 ExUP. 1000ml per 1000 mile was considered normal. My 1199 smokes blue if you blip the throttle when warming up (DMC said their demo used to fill the back yard with blue smoke!), it doesn't smoke when hot and it doesn't use as much as the ExUP, so I'm good. Jaser1, if you were really concerned I'd give your bike a compression check just to put your mind at rest, I bet it's totally fine
And now we know why it's high, just picked the bike up from 15000 Desmond service. The dealer did a compression check, rear cylinder 180 front 125.
was the reading from before or after the Desmo service? just my opinion, but I think 7500 mile oil changes, and 15K mile valve service is just to long especially on a lower mileage bike where everything hasn't been "bed in" yet. Im going to have my belts and valves serviced at 7500 (I'm at 3800 now) and my oil has been changed thrice already. Im on my second MTS ... the first a 2010 base model that was making a hell of a racket & running poorly by 7800 miles was showing a bit of shrapnel on the magnetic drain plug. This 2011 Touring S is a buttery & Quiet gem in comparison to the first bike. Hopefully your compression results were before the desmo service and you are well sorted now.
No compression result was taken during the DESMO service. Shims are all ok, something is amiss in the front cylinder, maybe something to do with a piston ring? So it will have to be investigated, and hope that as the rise in consumption was first reported a few weeks after warranty expired the decent thing will be done. I will be in contact with Ducati ,who have been very good at customer service it seems. Very fair in these sorts of situations, where there is no fault on my part as to what has happened.
desmo inaccuracies shouldn't cause oil consumption (I'm assuming). So I'm thinking like michel couque and assuming rings, or maybe gasket?
