I've been doing a lot of dual carriageways and motorways in traffic recently. I've been struck just how bad lane discipline is. Loads of people just tonk along without moving over, even though the lane to their left is free. Sometimes coming-up behind them and indicating to ask to pass is enough to get them to move over, but not always. In such circumstances, do you tend to undertake?
on motorway, i would get into a lane and stick to it, for decent length of period - not flitting between lanes with a clear purpose of undertaking and then pulling back out. keep in a lane at a speed, and if the outside lanes slow down, then it could occur that i go past them , slowly and with a close watch on their steering wheels, indicators and driver if visible. see a lot of outside lane hoggers on the M5 , as you may have experienced today...
An interesting article was linked from this forum not so long ago which stated authoratively that undertaking was not illegal in the UK but and its a big but, the traffic police get you for driving without due care and attention given that the hogger might just move to the nearer lane without thinking to look to his/her left. What do you do when they are in the outside lane and won't move over even after flashing them I have moved to the near lane and driven along side just incase they havnt seen me to give them a chance and if they have continued to stay in the lane I have just kept going
Yes, on occasion, but I don't like doing it, the idiot to my right might decide to move left without looking. Once the traffic density reaches a certain point the lane system where you overtake on the right and move left when you can do so breaks down. This usually happens once you go south of Kendal.
It happens past Reading up to the M25 junction Nothing in the near side lane and the other two full up Very frustrating
All the time especially if in inside lane already and the manoeuvre to cross to outside lane then back to inside is more dangerous - normally hang about so I know they've seen me the slowly under take with caution . 9/10 are middle to old aged men in German cars with 'my other cars a Ducati' stickers [emoji39]
i thought this thread was about undertaking... bit morbid but i'll have a look... turns out... I recently got stopped for speeding by a undercover biker (is that the correct term for a cop on a non cop looking bike?) (anyhu) i thought he wanted to race/ride fast but no he wanted to give me a ticket.. he said that the speeding wasn't why he stopped me but the undertaking was a step to far... although he did note that i waited some time before undertaking.. if the undertaking was so bad (a lone car for miles hoggin the right hand lane) why did he only charge me with speeding?
Once i had to give a friend of my daughters a lift to a skipping competition, she was a traffic officer,we were stuck behind a car in the outside lane, she told me to undertake in the middle lane as he was not making sufficient progress, its always stuck in my mind,i have no problem undertaking in my car but am extra cautious on the bike.
