The Road To Applecross

Discussion in 'Touring' started by harryweld, Jul 26, 2015.

  1. I’m thinking of a trip up to the Highlands of Scotland again after my first trip up to Skye in April. I’ve heard so much about the road to Applecross I planned to include a run across there. After checking clips out on YouTube I see it’s a single track with a really bad road surface and on some occasion’s lots of oncoming traffic. My question for people who have been there, why is it so highly rated and why should I go there? Bearing in mind I live in the Lake District where we have our own share of single track roads and I hate every one of them.

  5. If the weather is nice it's glorious. If it's not then forget it :)

  6. When I cycled it the top was covered in low cloud :(

  7. I'm with Finm on this. If you don't like single track roads, don't bother. It does seem to be something of a "thing" to say you've been. Two hairpins on the way up from the Kishorn end just before the top. View are good when weather is fine, but the first 6 ascents for me I couldn't see as far as the mast from the top. Surface is no worse than quite a few minor roads in Scotland.

Whilst the road is just so-so, the views, if clear, can be stunning. Everybody seems to go up and down again, but the road around the north of the peninsula is nice for scenery.

I always thought the whole point of going was to get to Glen Torridon, which is lovely, but single track again. If you're looking for something else, try Glen Carron to Achnasheen and the Loch Maree road.

  8. or we could just stay at yours and drink yer highland park?

  9. You wouldn't enjoy it - it's empty. I need to head north again.

  10. not got a tesco near by?

  11. I agree, I rode it on my Diavel this April in low cloud and rain, saw nothing after we turned off the 'main road' and that was it until just before the end, even lost sight of the riders in front of me, watch out if its windy. The road to the north is much more fun on a bike, and still very twisty if that is what you want, Scotland has far better motorcycling roads than the road to and from Applecross.

  12. I did it on my Aprilia supermoto a few years ago , what a blast , on a sports bike not sure I would get excited about it , as others have said far better roads in the area .

  13. It's not the same. The point of HP is to make it worth your while going through England. Also, no Tescos in Channel Islands. I do have drop left of the 30 YO Glenfarclas, which I'm saving for my birthday.

  14. Agreed - too slow for sports bikes

  15. I did it in a car several years ago on a day with great weather. Other than being stuck on the way down due to a pick up truck collecting a car and now way passed it was a great journey. Great views, great "bigness" (my word to describe the sky and space around me), Loch Torridon Hotel for a short stop followed by the best Chish and Fips I have ever eaten at the Applecross Inn. Would I do it again, yes.
