Morning all, Just interested in what luggage people are getting for their dvt's? I'm after some inspiration, I travel light but go away for up to 10 days at a time (the most wifey will allow!). I'm not interested in the official stuff as it seems expensive and quite weak. I travel one up and currently use kriega packs. They're ok but I feel this bike deserves something more permanent? Cheers
Advantage of hard luggage it is relatively secure and you can go for a wonder. Those Touratech types also act as crash bobbins.
I have the trax side cases from my 2013, waiting for sw-motech to make a new adapter kit, failing that I will fabricate my own. Same situation with the top box, no adapter kit from Givi at the moment, may have to make my own.
I have added the urban pack which is small powered tank bag and top box. Figured it's all I'll ever need and will keep the missus from falling off backwards when she falls asleep. Tbh by the time you have sourced something and often made it fit you could have just bought the right thing made for it. Lesson learned on that a million times so have splashed the dosh this time. Panniers too much IMHO if you need extra luggage get some thru over ones
I have bought the Givi Trekker top box,58L it is great, huge, the top rack also good for light stuff, you can even sit on it. and then I would get a huge dry/ 60/90 litres sack to sit on back seat moving all the weight forward that fits infront of the Square givi box, and easily strapped down to the each seat grab handle. I have the touring pack so the side panniers that fit well, and hold plenty if carrying a pillion. I have a silver top box that I will never use as part of the urban pack that I should sell, and almost cover the cost of the trekker that are down to £299. and you can get it in silver for white bikes
Seems odd that the Silver 42L box takes one helmet, but the black 42L say it takes two! No wonder it's more expensive!
I have the panniers; I like the space, and they're more aerodynamic than the flat rectangles from Touratech. More robust than you'd think, modulo an issue with the mounts; unless you have a habit of sideswiping cars, they should be OK. Depends on your particular needs, though; for me, this is a two-up touring bike, and I avoid riding in town like the plague, so filtering isn't a major concern.
I'm still in the 'to buy' section for bike & top-case (but the large trekker is ideal). As Madproff has done, I mostly use dry-packs of the 80L size strapped in-front of the top-case on my current machine for outings. Would love to hear & see more about this on a multi'
Just wondering, how much can you load the top case when using the same mounting base for the 48l? I loaded the original one with 18kg despite the 10kg limit warning. I didn't like the way the bike behaves under the load. I am seriously thinking to remove completely the top case rack and start using only the side panniers. It makes the bike looking ugly and affects seriously its drivability.
Panniers will still affect the handling, especially fully loaded, and suck fuel at above 80mph like Witney consumimg JD
I loaded my givi trekker top box the other day with 25kg, I put S hook to pillion, handled great, rode to Belgium with it
Of course they do! They affect the handling less badly than putting the same weight up high and out behind the rear contact patch, though. I can't comment about the difference in fuel consumption, because I haven't put a top-box on mine. I get about 5.5l/Km at 130, for what that's worth, and I'm plotting to put a luggage rack on the back for versatility. Aerodynamics aside, some things just don't fit into those boxes.
I saw a couple of other Multis in Brussels over the weekend, though one was a 2014 model with a pillion. One of them wasn't you, was it?
No it was the weekend before Last, we came back last Wednesday, Belgium, France Luxembourg. The Handling was not effected enough for me to not to ride it how I normally ride it, remember except weight, the box sits behind you, so it is not so effected buy air flow etc. and put a 50kg person on the back seat, has to be a little worse than a 25kg top box a little further back. On the Way back I did put less in the top box, and more across the back seat in a dry bag and tent. again no issues it was like it was not there, but that is why you pay so much for sky hook, press a couple of buttons and voila, all is normal.
