  15. It was indeed a good day, but you must surely agree that the cold stark result does pay flattery to Englands more than occasional habit of making a meal/mess of ‘simple chases’. I must say, later Thursday afternoon as Aussie wickets were tumbling I was starting to move to a frame of mind that said ’ I hope it does finish thursday, as I can then get a refund and only have to write off the cost of the train fares’.

Imagine - Friday dawns, a three hour journey to Edgbaston beckons and Australia 10 runs ahead with one wicket remaining – what would you do ? 3 hours travel each way for possible 20/30 mins cricket?!

As it was, we saw a decent amount of play, 1100-1550, and some activity- remaining 3 aussie wickets and two england ‘wobbles’ on the way to a low total, and victory.

The day was enlightened by ‘Death’ sitting behind me – some chap, on his own, and probably aged between 65-70 dressed in a black hoody, black sunglasses, some short of strange black long skirt and black socks with sandals ( only in England)- carrying a three foot scythe (how did that get past ‘security’?). He didn’t say much all day.

Slightly more amusing were the ranks of Beefeaters ( 20+), the flock of 15 Angry Birds surrounding Bo-Peep, and half a dozen Dolly Partons. The fancy dress always raises a smile at Edgbaston, as the locals are released for the day.

Expecting a relatively short days cricket, I put no sun cream on – about 1430, I thought perhaps I should as I was starting to glow. Sod it, have another pint- that worked.

The game finished at 1600- with interviews and presentations we exited the ground at 1630. With a pre booked train ( first class the same price as standard – easy choice) out of Birmingham at 1912- how does one kill 2.5 hours in Birmingham – we struggled. Couple of pints, a burrito, and a stroll around the Bullring- time dragged. Ive crossed Birmingham off my ‘must do a day trip’ bucket list….

Roil on trent bridge – will England ghost without Anderson?, will Aus crumble as Clarke seemingly crumbles – that’s cricket!

  17. drove 150 miles round trip today, to take my mother out for lunch.

I've come to the conclusion that everyone who drives slower than me is an idiot, and everyone who drives faster than me is a maniac

  19. This evening I've been with SWMBO to #1 sons house to see my grandchildren and have a meal, as we do every week/10 days or so.

After our dinner the youngest (18 months old) ran around for a bit laughing, giggling and charging around like a lunatic and then went to bed leaving the 3 year old (he was 3 in May) to play with grandad.

I say play but what he did was show me lots of countries on a world map (including UK, Spain, France, Italy, Russia, Canada, USA, New Zealand, Bangladesh, Malaysia, Namibia, China, Nepal, Brazil, Chile, Iceland and many more I can't even remember now). He told me their capital cities and a little fact about each country! He even told me a little bit that he'd learned about Waikiki beach!

I know he's my grandson and everyone thinks their child/grandchild is special but this kid is seriously bright. He has a fantastic memory and is genuinely interested in learning. He's been able to read since he was two, and can now read books like the gruffolo completely unaided. That said he does love playing too and his favourite games include playing with his toy cars and motorbikes. And because of this he also has a huge knowledge of makes and models of cars and motorbikes.

I am genuinely astounded every time I see him as to what he's learned in the previous week or so. I just hope he can keep it up and doesn't get waylaid as he gets older.

Oh and he doesn't get it from our side of the family. It's gotta be from his mothers side for sure :p
