1200 DVT Fuel Indicator Not Working Properly

Discussion in 'Multistrada' started by arihess, Aug 5, 2015.

  1. My fuel indicator is showing nonsense already two weeks. After I fill the tank it will either take half day before it will react or it won't react at all. Has anybody else experienced similar symptoms?

  2. Same problem, started with showing nearly empty when it only took less than 15 litres to fill up. Then it didn't show full after filling up, finally just stayed on 2 bars with the orange warning light on all the time. Not good when the trips (in miles) reset at every ignition off. I reported the fault to my dealer, Ducati Aylesbury, who booked it in for investigation. They had a spare fuel level sensor in stock (new part number for 2015 model) so changed it there and then, took just over two hours, under warranty. Seems OK but I've only filled up once since it was done.

Edit: The fuel level sender was changed after 6 weeks / 2,000 miles.

  3. Interesting.
I'm at about 2.5k and had no problems... Till this week!
Bike has stood a couple of weeks and started ok, 3 bars.
Went out, dropped to 2 then 1 by the time I filled up.
Filled to max, went and paid, came back and rode off to still show 1 bar. It crept back to 4 bars by the time I got home 1/2 HR later, but not the full it should have been.
Call to Aylesbury tomorrow I think!!

  4. As previously posted in other threads, my DVT fuel gauge worked OK for the first few weeks, then became erratic, and by 5,000 miles settled on showing empty (red, flashing, nil range) all the time, regardless if the tank is full or empty.

Added to the "return to zero" problem with the Trip Miles, it's awkward. For the moment I have set the speedo to Kilometers so that the Trips work, and refill the tank every 200-250 Km. Look forward to proper fixes for both problems shortly.

"They all do that sir" seems to be correct in this instance, so they will all have to be fixed under warranty.

  5. Same problem, fine for a month and now showing 16 miles in a full tank. Booked in for a fuel sensor swap in a couple of weeks.

  6. Just checked mine again and only 1/2 a tank and I know it's full!!

  7. Same problem with me. Filled up on a recent trip to Germany, just got onto autobahn and fuel level dropped from nearly full to empty in about 5 miles, thought I had a major fuel leak !!!

Had to use my mates Truimph Explorer second trip as my fuel gauge, as my trips also keep resetting.

Bike has done 1800 miles. New sender on back order, non in stock.

  8. I am using the miles on the bike and trying to remember when I filled up. Just in case. Tbh not great on a brand new bike tho, is it?!

@Tim Maccabee it seems a fair few have this issue already. Are Italy supporting you on this?!

  9. Did they need to open the tank to change that sensor? Just wondering if it's any hard task.

  10. I didn't watch, but looking at diagram in the parts catalogue I'd say the tank has to be emptied and lifted up if not removed completely to replace the fuel level sensor (item 9). It's a job I would be more than happy to leave to a dealer especially as it's under warranty.

  11. Wasn't thinking to do it myself, just wondering if I already paid for this repair or if I am going to pay for it when I buy my next bike

  12. I have done this job. Removing the old sensor from the tank and inserting the new one is very easy. So is plugging in the connector. But first you have to remove all the surrounding bodywork panels and replace them afterwards (which is a bit fiddly), and the tank has to be nearly empty so siphon out the petrol before you start. The sting in the tail is that depending on which types of sensor the old one and the new one are, the swap may require a software update to get the fuel gauge to work - so it means a visit to the dealer anyway just for the flash.

  13. Called Ducati Aylesbury. Yes sir, we'll change that under warranty. No questions!
However, can't fit me in till 4th Sept!!
Oh, can you bring it in low on fuel sir? Yeah? How do I work that out with no fuel gauge and no trip meter?!!

  14. Just for a matter of interest the updated software is now available for the trip reset problem

  15. I'm way off my purchase but I am starting to think the S1000XR bmw even with its ugly peak is the next bike for me. God dammit ducati why did you make such a beautiful bike with such shoddy parts!

  16. GZBZ, what makes you think the BM will be any different ?

  17. Don't mate! The local BMW dealer is friend of mine and he told me that he was horrified from the bad quality of the parts of the S1000XR when he tested it in Portugal. He said he cares little what BMW thinks because he represents them, in his opinion the DVT is by far better bike in all aspects regardless the performance of its rival - he loves my bike .
I see the bugs in the DVT being more of an Italian tradition rather than bad make or design. Given the two year warranty period I'd imagine these to be problem only for owners that live far from a Ducati service and need spend the extra time to get their DVT there.

  18. The bm is really good in some aspects but let down by others, I have an XR and a Dvt on order and hope I'm not jumping out the fire into the frying pan with the Dvt !!

The XR I have is faultless on quality it really does look good, the mutley's twisted seat and poor fitted plastics are not what is expected with a premium priced bike ! But the bm has awful suspension too harsh it's a backward step with the XR as they have remove the soft option and the other 2 options are shite, the suspension mode known as ESA is a gimmick poor quality units, easily sold to bods because you can set it up with a push of a button simples.
Lots of black plastics used on the XR I tend to not like this and the Dvt looks lush for not being cover in the black stuff, the engine in the XR is awesome but you need to ride it above 7k to understand this bike and in that zone it's licence losing time, it lacks character, every Ducati I have owned has character to a point i even look at my reflection in shop windows, it looks sexy, fook I'm so vain .

  19. Lets put things into perspective, these issues that have surfaced so far are...

    Trip counter resets
    Fuel guage
    Slow cranking/not starting
    Easily scratch display screen
    Side stand bolt
    Steering lock error

None of theses issues have I suffered thus far but in any case all have resolutions. Personally whilst I do not want any issue at all, I except that in these days when design and lead times are exceptionally tight things like these do occur and motorcycles are not the exception.

If you want a machine which does not suffer these things then buy one late in the production cycle.

I'll wager if you monitor a s1000xr forum you will not find greener grass.

  20. That seat in the DVT is more comfortable than any other bike in the market at the moment, and the plastics are fitted fine, don't know where you got this impression. I didn't mean to degrade the XR, I just quoted someone who sells those for living and has a huge reputation locally as dealer and ex racer. One fact that he mentioned also is the contradiction that instead of using a boxer type engine BMW chose to use a Japanese engine which takes off the reliability for longer tours that the GS provides. We know for fact that the Multistrada has been used for long tours whereas taking the XR for a worldwide tour does have a higher risk factor for sure.
