After 3 1/2 sessions at Brands on Thursday, there is slightly less than an egg cup full of very clean Motul 7100 in the catch tray. It is my first time out since the horizontal head gasket was changed, so new oil. I have gone around the whole engine looking for where it could have come from and apart from a drop hanging from the underside of the horizontal exhaust pipe under the oil filter, I can find no evidence of a leak. Everywhere seems dry and clean. I have run the bike up on the stand for about 15 or 20 minutes. Fan kicked in at about 100 3 or 4 times so definitely up to temperature but still no evidence of a leak. Not even the fine oil mist that required the gasket change. The fairing didn't go with the bike for the work so not a spill when filling. Does anyone have any idea what is going on ? Andy
Have you had a look around the gearbox sprocket area? I have experienced oil running along the clutch pushrod when the 'o' ring on the rod has deteriorated.
Is there a leak from one of the screws holding the cases together underneath and above the exhaust pipe. I have had a leak like that where a tiny amount gets in and around the thread of the case bolt and drips onto the exhaust. This only happens when it stands for a long time and I get a little smoke from inside the fairing where the exhaust burns it off. If it's not burning off then it might be as above or possibly even coming out of the clutch seal or offside clutch casing. An eggcup full of oil is quite a lot to lose and that seems more like a leak than seepage.
An interesting thought. I have a fully open clutch casing so I might just strip the clutch out to have a look. Thanks guys for your thoughts, it's much appreciated. Andy
I can confirm that the oil looked very clean and green. Looked like more than an egg cup full to me...ostrich egg perhaps? What sort of breather do you have? Could it have come from there perhaps?
Hi ma Hi mate, good to meet you on Thursday and I hope you had a good evening session. As you might remember the bike was on a slope ? When I took the fairing off there wasn't as much as it first appeard. Got a full RS style breather system so wouldn't expect anything to come throught the air box drain. Good shout though. Andy
Yeah, it was great. Zero stoppages but lots of very fakkin fast racers doing some close overtakes! How does the RS breather connect to the crankcase? Perhaps it originates there?
To all intents and purposes it looks like the standard road breather but the non return flap is in the air box after it's gone through an under seat expansion box. Andy
So I now need educating, the clutch operating rod has been removed and the short part from the slave cylinder end to the 2 'O' rings is dry and clean. The long part from the 'O' rings to the pressure plate is coated with a thick layer of Motul 7100. There is no immediate evidence of oil in the clutch housing. Does this sound right ? Andy
Hi Andy its probably just excess oil from when the filter was changed had this on mine once .how's the new motor must pull like a train
Hi jp, bloody engine never did it again but I have since learned not to overfill with oil because it does get chucked out. I'll have to get back to you with a report on the new engine, the bike should be well on its way Almeria by now where I join it for its first outing on Monday . Andy
