1199 Ceramic Coated Header Has Arrived!

  1. So it's fair to say I'm one of those firmly in the 'how hot!?' 1199 camp, as opposed to being in the 'what heat!?' crew. So much so that I've been going a little OTT with bits and pieces to help cool down my burning inner thighs (whilst riding the bike, not just in general :Wideyed:), although I don't need much of an excuse to spend money on the bike ;)

So far I've added carbon engine and subframe covers plus a larger 2nd gen carbon exhaust heat shield. I've also put reflective tape under the seat. All of these bits together have made a significant difference to the heat issue but it's not enough in my opinion.

So, I sent the rear header off to Camcoat performance coatings to have it coated internally and externally in satin black and it arrived back this morning.

I'm yet to actually bolt everything back on properly, but the workmanship looks great, the finish is flawless. I'm just stupidly keen to get out on the bike and see what difference this makes.

The guys at Camcoat were great btw, very helpful and kept me updated along the way with their progress. All in the work came to £78, but that included overnight TNT delivery, the actual coating was £48+vat which I thought was very reasonable.

Anyway, I'll stop rambling, here's some pics. I'll let you know what it's like when I finally get to ride it!

  2. +1 for Camcoat I had my exhaust system on the 1098 done a good few years back & I think it looks great, very similar if not identical to yours.

All communication & handling by Camcoat were first class.

The coating is pretty tough too, mine is lasting well, although TBH I'm not a high mileage rider.

Yours header really good, what difference, goodbye to polishing and cleaning is a dammed site easier too

  3. Thanks, it does look great! It's a shame it's going to be hidden under the heat shield really. So did it make a significant difference to the heat on your 1098? I'd really like to get the rest of my system done if it appears to be worth doing, although I'd probably get the horizontal header pipe done in their chrome finish as I'm not too sure about having that pipe done in black.

  4. Umm, thinking back to my schoolboy physics, isn't matt black supposed to dissipate/radiate heat and shiny reflect/contain it?
Rather like those space blanket things?
If that is correct, surely the shiny silver would be better if you are trying to keep the heat from radiating to your legs and bum...

  5. The coating is designed to retain the heat and move it through the exhaust system instead of losing it through the pipe work, don't ask me for the science behind it, Camcoat advised that their black finish performs better than the chrome finish.

  6. That looks really good I like it a lot

  7. Lovely job . Has it made a difference to the heat as I'm getting through carbon heat shields and carbon hungers like no tommorow ... Next thing I thought of was ceramic coating .. Just wondering does it sort out a lot of heat or just a little ... :(

    Sharky

  8. Ok, so I've now had a chance to ride the bike a couple of times and I must say the ceramic coating has not had quite the dramatic effect that I thought it might. Perhaps I was a little naive to think it would completely remove the problem. Saying that, the heat hitting my thighs does seem to have been reduced and now I'm left with just a hot bum, but not uncomfortably so. I didn't have to ride with my legs sticking out from as far from the tank as possible to help cool down, which I did used to have to do. So that is a bonus! It's also difficult to say, but I do think that that whereas before I was feeling pretty hot at any speed under 60mph it now seems much better from 40mph.

So, in conclusion yes I think it has helped, but I think I just need to accept there's a 195bhp motor sat right under me and whatever I do isn't going to remove the heat completely, it's got to go somewhere, right!?

This is the list of heat reducing implementations thus far...

    1. Carbon fiber engine covers
    2. 2nd gen, (larger than 1st gen) carbon fiber exhaust shield
    3. Carbon fiber subframe covers
    4. Reflective heat tape under the seat
    5. Ceramic coated rear header

    Things left to try...?

Titanium heat wrap on the rear header (in addition to the ceramic coating)
Additional ceramic coating on other parts of the exhaust system (I've even seen someone ceramic coat their end cans, but I won't be gong that far).
Ducati comfort seat - some say this helps, others say it doesn't.

After this I'm just going to accept that the heat is a 'feature' of the bike, man-up and ride the thing :)

  9. Oh and if you mean you're getting through huggers and shields because of heat damage to them, I'm afraid to say that my new carbon heat shield and my existing carbon hugger are showing signs of heat damage, the hugger was fine before I fitted the ceramic coated part, but I don't think the ceramic coating is to blame. I think what has happened is that the exhaust heat shield I fitted (which I did at the same time as the ceramic coated header) actually retains more heat than the plastic one I replaced which has caused my hugger to blister :( My heat shield also started to bubble up slightly but like I mentioned, I fitted this at the same time as the ceramic coated header and I'm sure the standard non-coated header would have probably done more damage to the heat shield!

  10. Have you retained the metal exhaust heat shield under the carbon one?
You need to wrap the exhaust, that will keep the heat in.
I think the head covers direct more heat to the seat, as the heat cant escape anywhere else!
Hot knees are better than hot arse (unless its brolly girls) as you can keep your knees away from the heads slightly. The killer is the heated seat, which is as bad as the 999/749 series in my opinion.
If you like the comfort of the original seat, dont change it, the comfort seat messes up your wrist weightings, and body position!

  11. alreet cupid? :upyeah:

  12. Yes I have the metal shield under the carbon. Perhaps I should try taking the engine covers off and seeing how that affects things. I think, as you say, I would prefer hot knees compared to a hot arse (unless it's on that brolly girl you mentioned)!

The trouble with wrapping is that I've not heard anything conclusive that says yes, this helps the heat issue. Some say it works great, others say they notice no difference. I wanted to go down the ceramic coating route as I know wrap can look a little rough over time and from what I've read comparing the two methods, ceramic coating appeared to perform better. However, combining the two might be the way to go. I have some DEI titanium wrap on order so I'll soon find out.

I have the comfort seat on order also, if I don't get on with it I'll sell it on...

  13. Sent my header off this morning for ceramic coating .. racespec.. told them put as many layers on as they can... Hopefully will get it back by then end of the week.... camcoat said there will be a 10% decrease in heat ... let me start with that 10% ... then wrap it ... last time i wrapped it ... it smoked like a mother ... so mmm not sure about that... will send the carbon back to powerbronze for a replacement set.. due to the fact that if carbon is produced for a bike make and model ... it should stand upto the effects of melting and bubbling...

carbon wise... was thinking about the ihmberger ceramic coated exhaust shield ... and their hugger...

anyone used any of the ducati performance carbon bits ??.

  14. Any reason you chose Racespec over Camcoat, just out of interest? I think they were significantly more expensive when I made my enquiry. A 10% decrease in heat might be about right I guess, I was hoping for more, maybe I should have asked that same question!

Wow, the carbon ceramic heat shield isn't cheap is it! I wonder if their hugger is up to the job when installed with the ceramic heat shield as that is going to retain a ton of heat, straight back onto the hugger!

  15. Sorry mate I have given it to camcoat to have the racespec coating done ... The black one .. Just told them to spray a few extra layers if they could ..

  16. Sorry, I didn't read your post correctly! Good stuff :)

  17. Trying to locate the hugger and heatshield at a good price ...

  18. They seem like a nice bunch of guys .. All this stuff melting is just doing my head in ..

Gonna go all out and try and get this job done once and for all

  19. Just a couple of pointers, are all you guys running 1199's ?,my 899 came with head covers and also the 899 has a steel subframe, the 899 got hot but it was never uncomfortable, now i have removed the head covers and fitted a 1199 rear subframe and sometimes below 50mph its unbearable and i have to stand on the pegs gs style to get some air flow,at one point i had to unzip my leathers to get some air to my arse,i think the ali subframe acts as a heatsink,i changed the subframe and removed the head covers at the same time so unsure which is to blame for the increased heat.

  20. So I've got the subframe covers which did help a lot plus a set of carbon engine covers, not sure how effective they were really. But yes, mine is a 1199.
