1198 Supervision Hid Kit Ducati 1198s.

Discussion in '848 / 1098 / 1198' started by RacingDuck, Aug 14, 2015.

  1. Anyone tried Supervision HID Kit on a bike? Will the headlight beam improve noticeably?
    Is it worth around £80?
    Thank's.

  2. Haven't fitted any to mine yet. Got some ready to go on. I think anything is an improvement over standard ones.

  3. What brand do you have @bettes? Do you have a link maybe?

  4. I have a cheap ebay one (£10 or so) from China fitted to my dip beam as a temporary measure at the moment. I won't fit one to the main as a HID does not light instantly so the flash function is lost.
The dip is about 3 times more light as the halogen main beam but consumes only 35 watts as opposed to 55 watts for a halogen.
I would normally have blogged the modification but am waiting for the spare light to arrive so that I can fit a proper dip/main projector in the right side with the HID and take the shield out of the left side for the halogen main beam. I will have one HID dip and on main I will have HID and halogen. I will also be able to fit some COB LEDs while I am in there.
The headlight should be here on Monday so I will take pictures and write the blog next week.

  5. The ballasts in your kit look like they are the last generation, they are much bigger than what is selling on ebay at the moment. I managed to fit the ballast behind the small black triangular panel inside the right mid fairing on the 848.

  6. @Bob T do you know the manufacturer on my picture? Haven't bought these yet due quite high price. Are you using the same lights?

  7. Nice.
    Thank you guys:upyeah:

  8. Got a set on mine both Hi & Lo

Had them for ages, no problems. They are obviously a couple of generations old but still fire up amazingly quickly. A quick flash does nothing but if held on for a second or 2 the Hi beam fires up, so sort of limited flash.

As the Lo stays lit when you fire up the main you don't lose any light, its not like a bulb goes out and another ignites, so no problem for me anyway.

I got mine from DDM in the US when kits for motorcycles were comparatively rare, 55W rating. There are usually 2 ratings, 35W and 55W.

Way more light, I have color temp of 6000K, on 55W this gives a blueish tint. If going 35W I'd drop to 5000K, I believe white with no blue and most light is approx 3800K. I would not go higher than 6000K as light output really starts to degrade above this and the light at really high temps takes on a purplish tinge.

As bulb life is usually a function of starts with HID not hours, I also modded the lighting circuit so I can switch the lights on or off manually to stop the restrike that occurs when you start the engine

  9. Looking at the picture I would say that it is made up of of standard ebay items. The labels on the bulbs are same as what I get from China. It will be expensive as someone has put it all in a nice box and as a middleman wants his slice of profit.

That kit looks just right at £20. As I said in my last post I would only fit it to the dip. If you feel competent to dismantle the headlight then it is worth changing the projector on the dip side for a bi-xenon. Here is one for about £10 http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/2-5-Auto-Car-Mini-HID-Bi-xenon-Projector-lens-Kit-HID-Headlight. I have two sitting here on my desk for my project, but may use one of them in the wife's BMW F800st. While the headlight is apart I will also remove the shield from the standard main beam projector that cuts off the light to the bottom, this is only there because Ducati saved money by using a dipped beam projector upside down.
When I get the spare light on Monday, I will photograph and video all the steps to change the projector, and also to just fit a HID kit to the standard headlight and blog it. As I have bought a spare headlight I may even do a second one for the fun of it.
I would also not bother with the 55 watt kit as the light output from the 35 watt will blow your mind as it is about 3 times brighter than standard 55 watt halogen bulbs.

  10. Any store in UK that sell complete plug and play kit?

  11. Ebay posts from China, but I think if you want somewhere in the UK to supply the same kit then you are going to have to pay over the odds for it. I have some here that I have bought for my own use, but if I was in business then I would double the price to sell them on. Good job that I have no intention of starting a business.
If you buy a ballast and bulb separately then you have a plug and play kit but you will have to fit the ballast somewhere and cut the back of the headlight cover to fit the grommet and wires through. There is no such thing as a HID xenon bulb only, they all need a ballast fitting.

  12. Okay chaps, I have spent a few hours this afternoon trying to document and show how to and the results of fitting a HID xenon kit to the standard headlight. I even mad a quick video to show the difference between a standard and the HID bulb. Go to the last post on my blog below.
The next post should be the changing of the projector to a bi-xenon (dip and main beam from one bulb) in the dip side.

  13. Nice blog.
As far as I know I need 2 xenon bulbs (35W/6000k) and 2 slim ballasts. On ebay those items are quite cheap however the 55W bulbs are a bit more expensive. Same goes for the canbus type which eliminates errors as I understand? Is 55w/6000k too much for a motorcycle? Is canbus a must to avoid trouble later on?

    Thank`s.

  14. 6000k is just the colour and nothing to do with power at all. If you have a canbus bike, the 848 is not, you may need a canbus version, but I have tried a standard 35 watt ballast and bulb in my wifes canbus BMW F800st and it never threw any errors.
One reason that I will not use a 55 watt HID is that the 35 watt gives more than enough light and when fitted in a bike will dazzle other drivers during acceleration. I would prefer to blind them a little with a 35w HID rather than burn their eyeballs out with a 55w HID. Cars that come with HID as standard in the EU have to have a self levelling system fitted to the headlights and no manufacturer uses a 55 watt HID as standard.
You only need two bulbs and ballasts if you intend to do the main beam too.

  15. Does your bike have canbus??

  16. Have no idea, was recommended to buy canbus to avoid errors. No need for canbus on a 2010 1198s maybe?

  17. Depending on how technical you are, you might want to just do the dip beam for now and wait to fit a bi-xenon projector to the low beam. The next post that I blog will be fitting this and will transform the lights even more for very little cost. I have a pair of bi-xenon projectors sitting next to me at this very moment!
