600ss Rebuild

Discussion in 'Supersport (1974-2007)' started by Terryf84, Aug 17, 2015.

  1. Hi guys. I'm new to this so thanks for accepting me and all that.
I've got my hands on a 1994 600ss and looking to strip it right down to the frame and start again. Is there anybody that has done the same and give me some pointers before I start. Cheers in advance boys and girls :)

  2. There are plenty of references to strips and rebuilds on this forum - there is one that has just started immediately below yours for example......

.......take loads of photos as you go, so you know where things fit when putting it back together.

  3. Lovely cheers mate.

  4. think about your budget and what you want to spend

and triple it and don't tell the wife and hide the receipts

  5. Apart from the engine, you will find the 600, 750 and 900 are almost the same bike..........the 900 engine is different and there are subtle other variations across all three like front and rear suspension and swingarm etc........some is because of production/specification changes over the years, but you wil find a lot of stuff is interchangeable.........I suggest that if you have any queries, ask before you buy or order anything...........for example there are wheel spec, axle and speedo drive changes around 1994, so although they look the same, swapping those parts around isn't easy / possible.

Lumbux will along in a minute because I didn't mention his 400ss;)

  6. Well I've just been delivered a new set of down pipes and can because the original ones were so corroded. I had been told elsewhere that monster down pipes would fit but i found out the hard and expensive way that they don't lol. Oh well, gonna start stripping it all tomorrow and have some fun

  7. Money no object, then? ;)

BTW the downpipes / headers were low grade stainless steel.......hopefully as yours are newer, they won't pit as easily.......you might even be able to see when they were made from the markings on them.

The nearest to your model is the 750 (engine wise), but the carbs will be jetted differently.....especially if it has a Dynojet kit.

Got any photos of the bike before you start?

  8. Obviously this hasn't got the down pipes or can in at the moment. It's been sat since 2007. My uncle bought it brand new in '94, my dad bought it off him in '99 and now I have it. It's only got 5k on it. My dad was gonna scrap it but I said I'd take it and spruce it up :)

  9. Fancy thinking of scrapping it:rolleyes:.......Good for you for sticking with it....
A tip, change the belts as quickly as possible if it's been standing that long.

You will be much better off playing with that, instead of your toys on the table.

  10. Yeah my old man said to change the belts as soon as I can. Biggest problem I have is sourcing any new parts that I may need. Searching through eBay is such a bore :/

Oh well, at least I'll have some fun doing it.

  11. If you need belts, contact Exige on here, or ask Craig at MotoRapido for a price....The 2 valve ones aren't that expensive.

And don't forget that some of us have spares as well......always worth the ask.

  12. Ah ok thanks. I've tried speaking to a Ducati dealer not far from me but they said that they don't really have much stuff for a 600 anymore. So it was just going to be a case of trawling through eBay ha ha

  13. But in your honest opinion do you think it's worth doing as this is an old bike and parts are becoming hard to come by?

  14. @Exige

  15. Yes I think you should
Needs some TLC get on it like sonic :)

  16. I have just finished a similar project. 900ss IE injected model. At the start got hold of a CD which contained official Ducati total parts numbers list with full diagrams of assembly. I thought this would make life easy. Not so. The CD showed many assemblies different to my actual bike and all the part numbers had been revised by Ducati at some stage. Luckily my local Ducati dealer was very patient and helped a lot by updating part numbers of bits I needed. I know what you mean about eBay. Gumtree is worth a look.
Time was not an issue for me so was able to spend time searching for bits. The whole project took 18 months. Give us a shout if you are struggling for anything. I have built up a decent list of contacts during my re-build.
You have the right attitude. Its fun fun fun.

  17. I'm just worried that I'd get to a stage where I'm stuck, can't source the parts and then can't get it finished :/

  18. Your in good hands here
Someone will know someone or something :)

  19. Check out the thread
how do you feel about your Ducati SS today

  20. Well then tomorrow night I'll start stripping it back to the frame.
Wish me luck guys and gals :D
