Had a look at this tonight. I like it, I think it ticks a lot of boxes for me. Any reason not to buy? Have you owned one or know of anyone that has?
a mate bought one brand spanking about two years ago. hated it. not for reliability but just because he thought it was bollox, particularly at speed. but to honest (he aint on here so i can say this) i think he was talking bollox.
A mate in work had one until he changed it for a new Tuono last week. The Tuono looks amazing and wins hands down for the tarmac but I did always think the lighter F800GS made a lot more sense than the huge 1200GS that another guy in work has. In reality 95% of these bikes never see a sniff of offroad riding but I still can't get my head around the sheer size and weight of the big bikes. I'd love to go for a proper offroad adventure on one to see what it is all about though.
The 1200 doesn't interest me. It's just massive, the hgv of bikes. I know bikes are varied because we all like different things. As finm says, reliability probably isn't an issue. I don't want a quick bike. I am fortunate to have the evo which I love. Triumph dealer is near me and also does KTM and Kawasaki. Might just look at those. I understand that a land rover won't see a field, so craps on the road. The reviews do say that it's not great on the road, it gets you there, but simple off roading is why it's built.
Ride one and see how you get on with the engine, I found it awful, really agricultural with nothing good going for it. probably great for off road adventures if that's your thing?
My wife has an F800ST, same engine with a belt drive. Love it. No problems in the 5 years that she has owned it and totally reliable. Same weight and power as my Ducati ST2, but with ABS and heated grips. I have offered to buy her a Ducati 1200 monster, which she likes, but she won't part with the F800.
They are not high performance bikes, reliable bikes they are. Owned two of them F8GS back in Oz, great bikes for travelling distances (offroad gravel roads / tracks) in comfort with the right setup, too heavy for technical riding (sand, etc.) and the weight difference between the 800 / 1200 GS is not that much different but the dimensions.... would I buy another one? YES...
Mines 7years old & has got 85k on it, done off roading but prefer black-gold. I keep up with most sports bikes too 120mph. I use to get 250miles from £20 of fuel with very steady riding. Economically & durability are great features of this bike imho. GunZenBomZ - Albums | Ducati Forum
This is a great bike, I have had two. The first was a 2011, the second is a few weeks old. As far as I can tell the only week spots on the earlier versions were crap OEM chains, mine did about 12k miles and the head race bearings, new set fitted under warranty at about 8k miles and it was about ready for another set at 18k miles. I really wanted to want a 1200GS but IMO this is far more practical. Extras I have fitted Corbin seat Touring Screen Scottoiler ARD Cases panniers BMW aluminium top case HID lights Aesthetic changes are Akrapovic exhaust Aluminium Sump guard Get your self over to ::::.UKGSer.:::: for biased opinions
I looked at the site, they mentioned power rangers Not a lot of problems, seem to be quite good reports. Nice bike btw, take it the sofa was an extra? I am a short arse, so need the lower seat. They are quite tall bikes.
Im 6ft tall and its plenty tall enough, however, a friend had hers lowered significantly, i think the list included. The sofa was third hand and now on its fourth bike ! Its the best seat I have ever used. Lower seat Shorter rear shock Moving the front forks
Its certainly built better than the Triumph although the 800XC has a few more ponies, not sure what the other realistic alternatives are.
I was going to look at the 800XC on the way home, just to rule it out. Heading back to BMW on Saturday so I think my minds made up with the GS. Quickly reading I thought the XC was better equipped as standard. The extra kit to bolt on is fairly extensive.
