A perfik day out, NOT!

  1. Went for a ride with a mate to Mabelthorpe, had chips and then stopped at Willy Woods on the way back for a cuppa, brill day.

That`s what I "would" have said, if, my bike had started :frown:.

Went to the old girl this morning and she gave a half hearted attempt to turn the engine then nothing, flat battery.
In her defence, I`ve not ridden her for six weeks(don`t ask). The battery charger I unplugged, so I could plug my compressor in, I then forgot to plug back in, DOH!.
I put her back on charge for a couple of hours then, with hopes of still going out, tried her again. Unfortunately, more haste mean`t when I tried to start her I`d forgotten to switch the battery charger off. Now she starts but the battery light is on at tickover, goes off when you rev it but I think I`ve probably facked the regulator :frown: :frown:.

Gonna leave her on charge over night, the eternal optimist in me hopes its just that the battery isn`t fully charged yet.

  2. If the light stays on I've got a spare Reg/Rec in the shed if you need to check before buying one Pete.
Not sure exactly where it is, but it would maybe do me a tidying up favour to have to look for it.

  3. Cheers Steve, very kind of you :upyeah:.

She ticks over just under 1000 revs and the light is on, hold the revs at 1000 revs and it goes out. Had a service done in August and no problems, she ran like a new `un on the way home but I haven`t ridden since so maybe I deserve this, hell hath no fury and all that.

  4. Wise after the event....

Couldn't you have asked your mate to give you a push to bump start it in the first place? Ride would have soon charged the battery...

    Got a handy hill?

  5. Hindsight is a wonderful thing:wink:

  6. Huzzah!
The old girl has sort of forgiven me for neglecting her.

I rung the guy that serviced my bike and he said the battery charger fuck up on my part wouldn`t have done any damage. He said the tickover was a bit low so it`s now set just above 1000 revs, with the headlight off the battery light flickers faintly, put the lights on and it goes out.

Just got back from a blast out with my mate from yesterday, did just short of 100 miles and the old girl ran faultlessly.
I know a new regulator will probably be on the cards sooner rather than later but at the minute, life is good  .

    Hi Steve,
Thanks again for the kind offer, not sure how easy it is to swap regulators but if it`s not to much trouble for you to find, I would like to make 100% sure it is just the regulator getting a bit tired.
    Cheers :upyeah:.

  7. Reg/Recs usually work or they don't Pete. There is sometimes a tell-tale sign of heat build up at the wiring connections on the two yellow wires from the alternator to the reg/rec unit. Just follow them up the frame from the front of the left side engine case and check the joints.
The original reg/rec on my 900 lasted 33,000 miles and then failed while I was in the S of France. It nearly cooked the battery as well, but I got some top-up acid from my mate who lived down that way, bought a charger and sneakily plugged it in on the campsite each evening as I travelled around. Only used the headlight if a Gendarme waved his finger at me, and got it home without further incident. Bought an aftermarket reg/rec unit when I got home and it is still fine after another 33,000.
I may have some "shed time" on saturday to look for the unit off my spare (currently stripped) 900, if you find any signs of yours getting too warm, and need to swap it to check. They are not too bad to get at if the mounting bolts and wiring are not showing signs of neglect.
