1098 Blowing Oil

Discussion in '848 / 1098 / 1198' started by big thumpa, Aug 19, 2015.

  1. Hi my 1098 is chucking oil out the exhausts just started on a run ,emptied the engine in 300 miles its literally spraying out the exhaust
Im guessing piston rings or vale stem oil seal checked coolant and its never moved or looks contaminated no cream in the casings or oil anywhere it shouldnt be eg back pressure, bike still runs the same as before .
Im a bit pissed off the say the least only done 1200 miles since major service not that im blaming anyone .
My nest step is to strip exhaust off and see which barrel it is then do a compression test just wondered if anyone has similar experiances or more knowledge than me i dont work due to disability so ducati isnt an option at the moment saved long and hard for service as it is
Im a time served mechanic so thinking of stripping and fitting new rings ?
2007 1098s 22050 miles full service history had from 8000 miles and always looked after never tracked just spirited riding up the highlands .
    Thanks stu

  2. early ones used to crack piston crowns right across the surface mate. ive seen a few like it now! time for a rebuild by the looks of it, up grade pistons and rings if you can, yes its expensive but you will have a cracking motor when its done.

  3. Doesn't sound good mate. Just done a quick search and it seems the valves and stem seals are going to be the main suspects. Hope it's nothing worse!

    • Thanks Thanks x 1
  4. Cheers for the info i have managed to narrow it down to rear cylinder after removing exhaust going to whip the head off to see what i can see thanks

  5. Yeah I remember seeing on here some cases of cracked Pistons. How the hell they don't just let go I have no idea!

  6. Yep, @Nelson had a cracked piston in his, wouldn't think it would be valve seals myself as these tend to go slowly and blue smoke on start up, to loose so much oil in such a short time i would be thinking a piston.
    Good luck whatever it is.

  7. Yeah I remember now, and I'm sorry I did mean to say all the very best for it and that it isn't anything serious. Don't suppose it's a blocked breather pumping the oil out when hot is it?

it will look like this, think this is actually nelsons old piston.

  9. Yup, my money would be on a cracked piston.... Like mine here. Piston broke 002.jpg

  11. Well ive got all the bike stripped down to the engine at last!!!! going to have a go at taking the head off tomorrow. Really hope its just a cracked piston as mentioned as shouldnt be to mutch hassle to replace
Thanks very mutch for your help

  12. New pistons come complete with rings from ducati and coast a lot.
I put a used one in and it was fine....Well right up until the bottom end went...:Banghead:

  13. Well got the rear head off no crack in piston but a hell of a lot o piston slap and barrel thick with oil so new pistons and rings needed i reckon. Will the barrels be ok theres no damage but just wondering about wear ?
Also exhaust valves look dodgy not shure if just carbon build up or not im in a dilemma now do i spend all this money on parts and have other probs or just get another engine
    cheers stu

  14. id just clean and relap the valves mate, have you got the piston out yet? there should be something obvious if your burning that much oil.

  15. my track bike doesnt run any air filters!!

  16. Yep rear bore is completely shot ,striped the front cylinder and its like new compared to the rear it doesnt even hold the piston in the barrel just slides to the bottom itself im also dubious about the amount of side play in the big ends in excess off 5mm
so im just going to get another engine save all the hassle after pricing stuff up at ducati :Shifty:
Thanks to everyone for your help

  17. Wonder what caused that...Perhaps over fuelling in that pot? will it continue on the new engine?

    • Thanks Thanks x 1
  18. I'd be considering a used barrel and piston before spending mucho dinero on a new motor.
You'd have that done in a day.

    • Thanks Thanks x 1
