749 190 Profile Tyre Over Standard 180

Discussion in '749 / 999' started by Dubs, Aug 24, 2015.

  1. Just wondering....

has anyone put a 190/50 section on their 749 over the standard 180/55 ? Its nothing to do with looks, more purpose.

Reason I ask, there is a chap over here who is rather good at suspension setup. He has been fiddling about with a monoposto ( ive a biposto ) and reckons that the bike should have a 190 as stnd, not the 180. He has adjusted the steering angle, brought the back wheel back further and put on a 190 rear. He reckons its almost there and has improved handling vastly, over what was already a very good base set up.

    What say you ?

  2. Geometry-wise, I can think of no reason why a 999 is specified as a 190/50 rear and a 749, a 180/55. It's essentially the same bike.

I have tried both sizes on my 999S and I prefer the 190. Other people's mileage varies, as ever. Take from that what you will.

    TL/DR: Why shouldn't you put a 190/50 on your 749? Can't think of a reason not to!

  3. The 190/50 was a fashion statement byducati. The radius profile is flat, increasing efffort needed to turn the bike. The 180/55 is a better tyre on the standard 5.5inch rim.

  4. I would have thought a 190 was too over tyred for a 5.5 Rim - found this on't net:

  5. I run a 200/60 in a 6 inch, sure the 190 will fit but as it demonstrates so well here ^^^ unless its a 55 profile its no good really

  6. Hmm ... 190/55 ... will have to try that next time.

  7. Snap, may try some road supercoarsas (cheaper than track and waaaaay cheaper than slicks) and go down from the 200

  8. Tried a 190/55 on my 999 and it fouled the (05black) arm at the back with a newish chain on standard gearing. Running a 180/55 at the mo which is 5ish mm lower profile fitted. I'll use the 190/55 next year when the chains stretched and wheel is further back. Also had to raise the hugger on spacers. Tyres are michelin pilot pure.

  9. i have thot of this myself but more for the looks than any handling improvment,:Shamefullyembarrased:,, but a bit doubtful as i recon it might be overtyred on the standard rim and dont want any reduction in handling,,, does the 999 have a wider rim ???

  10. Some of the Aprilia Milles had a 180/55 or 190/50 option on the back wheel......be careful going much bigger than that though, think of what 900streetfighter has said......longer chain may be required, fouling swing arm/hugger....Ducati didn't spend thousands developing bikes with a certain size tyre for nothing!!!

  11. raising hugger on spacers... i like it! unrelated to tyre choice (i think) but since having my hugger painted (when i guess they may have baked it?) and new tyres (bt30's) fitted, the tyre just rubs on hugger.. just a lil on the left.. have jiggled it several times (and yes i know, more than twice is a wank) but to no avail.. but some lil spacers!!! why didnt i think of that!!!???

  12. They didn't spend any time at all - just chose the best they thought at a price point (a little bit more thought than what they put into the starter system perhaps - but price would be the prominent factor) I've heard some companies just about give tyres away for factory fitment honours ;)

  18. since it has oft been stated, the 999 is identical to the 749 apart from engine size,, so why would any frame, swing arm ,chain etc mods be needed , only issue is rim size,,, that is a bit more "interesting " , to me anyway...
