Early R1..?

Discussion in 'Lounge' started by figaro, Sep 17, 2012.

  1. I've been offered a '99 R1 as part of a deal on my Triumph, but don't really know much about them. Anyone had one, or can shed some light on what to look out for?

I'm much too fat and old to even consider one really, but inside my head I'm still 16...

  2. I can only talk about the cross plane crank version which is a beaut. Mate of mine used to have a 99 R1 and loved it :upyeah:

  3. I believe that the 99' R1 is the last year manufactured with carburetors and is very, very fast! I know that as I have been out riding with a mate who has one, phenomenal performance.

And as 'Bradders' on here has mentioned, deep down inside we all want one!

  4. If it's fairly original and not been to badly 'improved' by previous owners I could definitely go for it. Don't know anything about it yet, I've only just received the offer, and it's nothing like the kind of bike I was thinking of (I was considering something like a speed triple or monster or Griso). Definitely tempted though.

  5. I had a '01 R1, loved it but it was a bit bland and was a jack of all trades imo. It was bloody fast tho!
I would have another asa second bike if I could afford it to go with the Ducati.

  6. Ivebeen looking at getting another for my track bike (some road)

Had one before but no v5, sold it cos I thought I'd use my road bike on track days all the time but I was wrong.

Theyre bloody great bikes, handle really well and great torque , either the 4xv or 5pw are the best of the older R1's, they got a bit guttless after that for a few years, that's when the K5 gixxer was taking top spot.

Im hoping to pick one up this winter

  7. The best vintage, that year

  8. I want one to add to my collection, a'98 R1 in red-and-white would be ideal.

  9. To be honest, there are plenty about. The really nice ones seem to command good money but generally they can be had for peanuts for what they are.

  10. Had a 98 in red/white and fikin loved it, smooth, comfy, fast, best lookin jap bike ever, gave it to the wife as a xmas prezzie a couple of yrs ago as i couldnt stand selling her and i could still take it oot for a blast when i want. think the 99 was tamed down a tiny bit but still a great bike.
Ps. wife loves it too and she says she is never selling it!!

  11. I had a 2001My 5JJ. The last of the carb models.

It had a high-rise Harris system and dynojet set-up. Very fast, super smooth.

Get it, ride it, love it!

  12. Make sure you hang on to her, wives like that are hard to find

  13. Well, the guy's been in touch again and is offering me the R1 and a grand in cash for my Triumph. To be honest I might struggle to resist, it looks pretty good to me.

  14. Honestly mate they're great bikes, that is if you want a sports bike.

Ergos are pretty comfy although I must admit I only used mine on track but the handling was epic. Depending on what type of riding your likely to do I'd recommend getting a steering damper but other than that just regular oil changes and these things will go for 1000's upon 1000's of miles without many issues.

God I miss this bike....I'm getting another too :)

  15. That is the sticking point. I'd decided a couple of years ago that I had no need for a sportsbike any more, hence the Triumphs, the ST2 and the fuglystrada. But then I look back at the fun I had on the ZXR, the TL and the Mille, and it all comes flooding back. I'll go look at the bike and see if I still fit on it before I make a decision.

  16. I sold mine earlier this year, bags of fun and reasonably cheap
    I had a 4xv on a T plate
Ride it and put it in the garage till you want to ride it again mentality , it's fit for a purpose - goes fast
I took it to le mans last year and toured for a week no problems.
I would think a good condition one is probably worth about 2k if you swap, mine had done about 28000 miles and ran and started fine no problems, they look good in blue and are comfy
    Good luck ImageUploadedByTapatalk1348121182.976205.jpg

  17. Fig do it mate there bloody awesome !!!! This was my first big thou , no issues just maintain the exup valve ...... Original bonkers r1

  18. The early R1s were a bit on the lairy side, lots were crashed in the early days even by the good riders.

As long as you have that in the back of your mind when you're giving licks you'll be fine.

  19. Did just that, and that's why I didn't buy a minter of a RGV250 a while back ....... :frown:
