  3. As found on Ducati.org:

    Characters 1-3: World Manufacturer Identifier

    Z = Italy
    D = Ducati
    M = Motorcycle ( i.e. ZDM = Ducati)

    Vehicle Descriptor Section

    The 4th through 8th positions in the VIN are the Vehicle Descriptor Section or VDS. This is used, according to local regulations, to identify the vehicle type and may include information on the platform used, the model, and the body style. Each manufacturer has a unique system for using this field.

    Character 4: Motorcycle Type

    1 = street version
    2 = dual purpose version
    3 = off-highway racing version

    Character 5: Motorcycle Model

    D = (example: 1987 Paso 748)
    G = (example: 1987 750 F1 Laguna Seca)
    H = homologation model
    K = (example: 1990 750 Sport)
    L = supersport
    M = (example: 1992 Paso 9071e)
    N = (example: 1993 750SS)
    P = (example: 1995 E900 Elefant)
    S = hypersport/superbike
    R = monster,
    T = sport touring
    U = 9X9 series
    V = Multistrada
    W = GT1000

  4. The 10nth digit is the year of manufacture so its either 1981 or 2011 .

  5. 999 R EUR 05 MON R

  6. Could be but there is a digit missing the 10nth should be a number.

  9. built in 04 but 05 model

  10. So did I you know it was an "R" ?

  11. That didnt happen with the R if it was built in 04 it is an 04 model . It might have been registered in 05 .
    You seen it or have an interest in it .

  12. Thanks Guy's,
    just checking it's what it was advertised as.

  14. About riding it back ?

  15. Well mines an 06 with an 06 number an 06 plaque and one of the 190 made in 06 . How would the plaque of authenticity look if it had the previous years number on it . They were also brought out on a yearly basis for the world superbike homologation . If it wasnt made in the year of the race bike that was on the track then it wouldnt count in the numbers that were needed for that year surely .

    I wanted an 06 999R when I purchased it . If it had 05 on the chassis number it would have stayed where it was.
    If I was going out to buy one now it would make no difference at all . They are a wonderful bike and can only appreciate in value . Good luck with it Bazzer.

  16. The bike is face lift model red frame black swingarm. and i think it's number is 0043 or 48 on top yoke tag. Full service history from same Ducati dealer. Gonna have to sell my 07 999 when i get the R.

  17. Thread resurrection.
    OK, it seems from the 999R's i've owned with VIN beginning ZDMH400 ending 009??? [engine # W4], that these are the 2004 model red framed bikes with top fairing air vents, built early 2004.
    I want to buy a bike with ZDMH401 ending 011??? [engine # W4B], which i believe are the 2005 model red framed bike with no top fairing air vents, PLUS the engine upgrade, built late 2004. The engine numbers restart at W4B000003 for VIN 011??? onwards.
    Knowledgeable contributions please..........

  18. The engine numbers on the 2005 bikes are usually 3 above the yoke tag number. So, Bazzers bike will probably have engine # 46 or 51. The plaque further up this thread would be for a bike with same engine type as Bazzers, but probably the 517th built. They will of course, have designated later model years to suit the racing departments homologation requirements.
