Tyre Choices... 899

  1. I'd stick with the Corsas if I were you.

  2. Tbh I thought the Diablo corsa was a great tyre, had tons of confidence on it and it had plenty of tread. Are u sure they aren't multi compound?

  3. I didn't think so...?

Seen lot's of posts on the net with people saying how bad they square etc..

  4. Ohh fair enough! U just assume they would be, especially being the tyre down from the supercorsa!!

  5. Supercorsa's btw... Horrific on my 848, rear toast in 2800 miles, and the front tread had gone out of shape also.

  6. Anyway........he hasn't got his bike yet with the original tyres so this is all a bit academic :)

  7. Sportsmart 2s held up well for ride outs and felt ok to me on a track day. 3k to wear bars. British superbike school.jpg

  8. Was referring to multi compound or not.....

  9. ^^ Dunno. soft middle if multi compound.
Comes out 1st in a recent magazine test and confidence inspiring (once warmed up!). But wear rate is mega quick. Would be easy to go out for a long ride thinking plenty left and come back on a slick.
For people that do low dry miles ;)

  10. Just realised that there was an obvious 'line' between centre tread and outer tread when I first scrubbed the Pirelli in. Makes me think its dual compound.

  11. Basically for the 180/60 on the back of the 899, at the moment you are stuck with a choice of two manufacturers, Pirelli or Dunlop.

For Pirelli's you have a choice of 3 tyres :-

Diablo Rosso II's - 75% road / 25% track, sticky compound at last 25mm or so at the edge of tyre.

Rosso Corsa's ( Standard fit on 899 ) 50% road / 50% track, sticky compound at last 60mm at edge of tyre

    SuperCorsa's - 25% road / 75% track, whole tyre is sticky compound I believe

I've got through 3 sets of Rosso Corsa's and can't get more than 2,500 miles out of them, my last ride ended like this :-

But they are also pretty good on track :-

Great tyres, been very happy with them, but I'm ready for my 4th back tyre in 6,600 miles.

I fitted a Diablo Rosso II to the rear for a 4 day weekend around Wales in April, now these being more "sport / tour" biased are supposed to last longer.
I did about 1,100 miles over the 4 days and it didn't seem to wear much better than the Rosso Corsa tbh, I would say it was about half worn when I took it off, the plan is to put it back on and finish it off with a 3 day trip to Scottish borders late Sept.

So..........Next time around I'm going to try a set of Dunlop Sportsmart II's, a mate of mine has them on his BMW S1000rr and see's over 4,000 miles out of a rear tyre.
I've never really been a fan of Dunlop's so I'm a bit sceptical, but I'll give a set a go and see what they are like.

I really wish I could get the Metz M7rr's in a 180/60 or even Mich PR4's for later on in the year, but the choice is very limited in this size.

    • Thanks Thanks x 1
  12. I was just going to say I know now why I was confused as the two Pirelli tyres are a really similar tread pattern I confused them. 2500 miles is low for sure, no wonder I thought I had an obscene amount of grip when I rode the 899! The sportsmarts are worth a go though for sure

  13. Looks like i'll be going sportsmart2's once I've shagged the originals then.

    Thanks all.

  14. I ve got super corsas on mine, done 3500 miles and 5 days on track in that and they have only squared off in the last couple off hundred miles, really shocked how long they've lasted and how good they are

  15. If u look on pirelli's site and go into the 'technical spec' they are actually tri compound rear, which is actually just a harder middle and soft shoulders, still, will see how long they last!

  16. Got Metzler m7rr fitted to the S1r. Very impressed so far, 400 fairly hard miles and look like new. Sportsmart 2 were not in stock on the day I went for tyres. Doubt there will be much difference tbh.

  17. +1 for the stock rubber - I've done a track day and ~4.5k miles on mine and they are just ready to be replaced... They are a little bit squared off but not massively. Wet grip is never going be quite so good as less sporty tyre, but I doubt most Panigales see too many wet days anyway, and so long as you don't do anything ridiculous they're absolutely fine.

Once you take them on the track you can actually see that they are multi-compound because the soft bit wears differently:

  18. I wondered if u still had yours ;-) I just bought a red 899 so if u see one around Newbury it's probably me!

I like the standard rubber tbh, if the front wears badly I'll switch to sportsmarts but otherwise will just swap the rear
