I'm gonna rebuild my 900 SS over winter, with the intention of getting it on the road again next year. I was gonna start a thread, is here the best place for it?
I'd say so. Especially if you post some pic's. When you say re-build, is that engine out of frame? I bought my IE in May 2013. Ran it through summer and took off road in October. Dismantled the whole thing. Got back on road May 2015. I found that if I did not set a time then nothing was rushed and time taken shows in the results. Also I could wait for parts on ebay etc and get the prices I wanted to pay. I'd never done a whole bike before and enjoyed the learning curve. I want to do another but dont think I could bear to part with this bike. Have not got room or SWMBO permission for two bikes.
Will do loads pics to go with it, consider this the thread then. I bought bike in a sorry state in 2011. Rebuilt it ano to cut long story short painted frame and petrol stripped part of it...problem one. Problem two was oil burning which I think is the stem oil seals, just wasn't running great. I had put some trick bits on but I'll go over the rebuild in detail over winter and post up pics of the nice bits. Whilst engine was out of frame I am sorting the heads, cleaning them up etc and I have already got cylinders redone with nikasil. Basically I am only waiting on the frame to start as I an getting it painted just now. Should be finished very soon. Then I have to get some engine studs removed from block, welding to crankcase where historical damage was never fixed well before I had it and finally paint engine. Once this is done the bike should go together really fast as I have almost everything I need....it's cost me an absolute fortune and I could've got something far more expensive than an SS, but I love it and it's gonna be just how I want it. I've got heaps spares and extra bits. I've got enough to make another bike.....in the future.
Always like an SS rebuild thread to follow : ) Get loads of pics posted up fella, looking forward to this : ) Ian.
Current state of engine, making an engine stand and checking crank plug, which looks fine ( not sticking out at all)
This turned up this week.... Got some 2k paint, gonna get a local bodyshop to paint. Graphics coming from image works, seat pads and brackets on way from Ducati Glasgow.
Ok, I picked my frame up today, and Ricambi-Weiss panels arrived. Bad pics done in a rush but will put more up to display the paintjob soon. It looks great and cant wait to get started.
Started putting it together tonight. I had put screws in the threads, but i dont think its really needed for paint and stupidly i used some thread lock on a couple on the foot rest mounts that are gonna be a pain to get out. I was being extra careful that they would remain in through blasting etc. Shouldnt have bothered, couldve just chased thread of paint. Anyway, heres some pics of tonights work
