Hi Peeps May I encroach on the vast knowledge and experience of the membership of this excellent Forum? I own a 2007 1098S and although these are fab motorcycles they probably have their faults. I'd like to form a list of 'must doo's' to enable it to be as reliable as possible. What advise would you give me? (clean ones please) on spares to carry? mods to make? etc Thanks in advance.......
First,y, check recalls have been done, for example the cambelt tensioner so were plastic I believe on the launch bikes and a recall was soon issued to replace with metal. Otherwise I can't add much specific to the 1098, others will I'm sure but just general good maintenance like looking after the clutch
Anything that is small enough to fit into your pocket! I have not found the room for more than that on my 848.
Don't know if the battery box heat shield was a recall on the 1098. On the 848 it was. Suspension set up and a decent seat are a must.
Might be worth having a look at the r/r connector and cleaning it up a bit. Mine burned out so I cut the connector out joining the wires directly to each other. The other thing is to upgrade from the std r/r to a mosfet one. @chrisw sorted mine out for me for one from a triumph.
There was a heatsheild at the Reg/Rec @bettes and on the early 1098s there was changes to the cush drive plate on the rear sprocket. Unless you've never ridden it you'll already know about the rock hard suspension that needs fixing. Nothing really screaming out at me urgently but here are things I did, The air filter can let shit bypass it at the seals a K&N or BMC will help that or better still MWR AIRFILTERS (scroll down) as suggested by @Jamiemac Double up/replace OEM starter, main earth and solenoid to starter motor leads @Exige sells a kit (I've just purchased, I had another crap quality kit on and can vouch that the OEM leads are pants after a few years) Headlights are shit, so possibly HID conversion? Rad & oil cooler, protectors, buy or make yer own. Decent seat if small (like me 5' 7") then the foam seat, if tall 6' & over DP Superpole seat. Better grips (I use ProGrips and really like them) Hugger or/& R&G shock sleeve (I've had the shock sleeve on for a while, in the winter I remove for a look, it works great, although it gets burned and will need replaced eventually) Possibly Kreiga fork protectors on the forks if an 'S' model as Ohlins seals are not the best. If you find the clutch heavy then an aftermarket slave. None essential but I've added a lot more, however these are the mods that I think made a real difference
I had a quick look and tried the spring rate calc from this site RT - Digital Product Search and states that the spring rate should be increased for my weight etc. Is this correct?
Yes I believe that is the consensus. Cannot remember the full story but something about a harder spring and loosening off the preload, but check I could have it all wrong With my riding gear, I'm around 70 kg or there abouts, and fitted a softer spring and that works for me, but as I ride slow and my style could best be described as timid on a good day, it might not be the best solution. It just felt good to have suspension, when I went for a road test I thought it was a hard tail, every ripple in the road was launching me out the seat. If you are going to get the suspension seen to, then I'd take it along to a specialist to get the bike set up. Many on here report its the best money they ever spent and the bike becomes a completely different animal. Oh and @bettes said, if my reg/rec goes south then a Shindengen Mosfet model and possibly soldering up the wires if the plug was damaged.
Thanks Jock,, for my weight of 90kg it calcs a slightly softer front spring and a tad harder rear compared to OE. (anyone else tried this conversion site?) RT - Digital Product Search The Mosfet I've investigated and found a supplier near me that manufactures one so may try them. Its the RR53 model: Regulator Rectifier for DUCATI 996, 748S, & HONDA VFR800 manufactured by Electrex World | Electrex World Ltd Thanks for everyone's advise so far especially Jocks......
Oh just thought of one more that's useful Mirrors are pants because they vibrate like buggery. Don't recommend extenders as they won't help much. I got DP mirrors, they are slightly smaller so chicken dancing still obligatory, BUT they are quite rigid so you can see through the things. Downside the LEDs aren't up to much & nowhere near as good as the stock indicators LEDs. The other route is Motoscience, these are not cheap and I believe his DP mirrors have improved LEDs. He also stocks other models. @bettes I believe has one of his offerings so maybe he'll be kind enough to pop back on or ping him. As I recall he rated them. Henry the guy who runs the site is a pleasure to deal with and knows how to ship :Angelic: Moto-Science : The Ducati Mirrors Specialist - Home
