It was. You can actually buy a replica kit car of it which used an air cooled Skoda engine. They were very nice kits and not that cheap.
Anorak back on..... The speedsters would be roadsters whereas the OP showed a hard top. They must be one of the most popular kit cars in the UK (after Cobras) and the Chesil ones are top quality, and price! Replicas are normally based on a Beetle in the UK as the design principles are so similar i.e. floorpan rather than chassis, air cooled flat 4 etc. I must admit that until a few years ago I didn't see the point but 356 values have soared so they now seem sensible. My old man, passed away now, for some strange reason was into kit cars. He bought a 3 wheeler based on a 2CV the name of which escapes me. Anyhow we used to go to the kit car shows at Newark and Donnington and the first speedsters we saw were based on Skodas. There used to be some weird an wonderful stuff. You could buy an E type kit fibre glass body based on the XJ12. That was like a lot of the Cobra kits easily as good as the original
My dads 3 wheeler was a Lomax still sat in his garage. He left it to my brother who would rather sit in the Pub
