Hi guys i'm hoping someone here can help.As the weather is improving over here went for a night ride and found i had no tail light or brakelight.Took the lens cap off and both filaments are smoked.Replaced the globe and it works but both filaments glow so no visible brakelight, what's wrong?? hope someone can help, thanks.
Possible you've lost an earth? It sounds to me like the electrikery is looking for alternate route to earth Did you check no bake light on application of both back & front brake? If so then its unlikely to be a switch/pressure switch fault Is it glowing like the normal tail light and the brake just not operating at all or does something else happen to the light when the brakes are applied If the former likely a break somewhere in the brake light wiring think its red/green, if the latter then possibly earth, black wire. Do the indicators work as they should? Are they glowing too?
Thank you for the replies.Indicators work normally. With a new bulb both filaments are glowing when i turn the ignition switch on so no brake light when i squeeze the lever on depress the rear brake pedal.
I think two of you have already covered the possibilities looking at the symptoms - the current is either 'back-e.m.f.-ing' due to a poor earth in connection with one or both the circuits (sidelight/brake) OR one of the brakelight switches has jammed on (or if it's an earth-return switch then a wire from switch is damaged and earthing somewhere). As said, disconnecting one brake-light switch at a time is a nice easy test that I would try first.
I cheated and took it to an auto sparky. The little spring loaded plunger on the rear brake pedal switch had snapped off so the rear brake light was on full time till it smoked the bulb. Thanks for your answers guys.
