They are way too powerful for ST's, totally un-necessary They are way too bitey, the later billet style has better feel according to the experts, ST's don't need better brakes, they need better handling for their owners. Craig
ST's do seem to eat wheel bearings fairly quickly - don't get "genuine" Ducati ones : they're made by SKF anyway so get the code off the side of the outer race and buy SKF bearings from you local bearing shop - they cost about 1/3 of the Ducati price. Not a difficult job to change them...
You must buy the correct rated bearing, there are different types for the same size. 6005 2RS C3V2 are the high speed type you need for front and rear. Craig
I don't doubt it. I was responding to your assertion that 4 pad calipers were too powerful on an ST. I have used both 2 pad & 4 pad on mine and that is the reason i disagree with your assertion. As standard ST's do need better brakes, 4 pad calipers are better brakes.
As it happens the vendor has just told me he's got a decent second hand tank on the way and a bodyshop lined up to paint it!!! Also that it started straight up and sounded well ,once the battery was charged. I'd already budgeted the belts anyway .... I'll get some exactfits from Exige and fit 'em myself. I'll need to strip the plastics off anyway to do my "left hand drive" conversion (grip & brake on left, clutch on right) and re-grease everything (including ElectroProtecting all the connectors). Only question is belt tensioning .... anyone got a tension guage?
No, I'm doing belts on mine this winter, have just downloaded the gates app and a 99p mic off ebay.....
I'm pretty analogue when it comes to phones & stuff ....... don't have a smartphone! Does the Gates App work on a laptop? Or do I need to borrow the old lady's phone? Have you any experience of sonic tensioning or are you going to make it up as you go along?
There is no need for that electronic stuff, 5mm allen key is all you need and probably already have. 45* degree twist method is just as effective, the last thing you want is them being too tight, so don't search for perfection too hard. Google it Craig
I used the 5mm Allen key method on my SS. Tbh the gates program is very simple and with the addition of a mic being the only thing you need it should be easy to use. It's off the Google play site, not sure if you could get a laptop to run it. There's more than one way to skin a cat.....
Well folks ... a quick update. Been back in touch with vendor to arrange time to have a better look and a listen, now he's charged the battery and told me the bike started up with no trouble. Latest thing is that the Information Panel (the bike's early enough to have analogue speedo) is playing up. He's spotted a replacement on fleabay but is going to investigate a possible repair before buying. Anyway, what with the tank, the painting and the info panel he's now undecided on selling ..... watch this space. So, does anyone know about repairing the LCD panels? If it's a common and fixable fault I may be able to negotiate a small price drop and have it as it is.
I use the twang method on belts with a guitat tuning app. The A string in a standard tune is 110, so its easy to measure the belt tension.
Hello, me again. Vendor of bike I was originally interested in has decided to stick 200 quid on the price to cover expence of replacing tank and info panel. Meanwhile another ST4S has popped up for sale in MCN, up in the Midlands. Went up for a look on Sunday. Bike has 12k on the clock, panniers and pretty new T30s. Also been round Spain this year and remained in very good nick. Does have bar risers and Zero Gravity tall screen but that's easily corrected if I don't get on with them. Head races are a little notchy but that may only be a case of clean and grease .... if it needs new races that's not going to break the bank. Vendor's a mechanical engineer, ex club racer and very nice bloke. He knocked 100 quid off the asking price because of the head races, which neither him riding the bike nor the tester at the recent MOT had noticed. So I bought it. Not brought it home yet but it's nice and warm where it is for a couple more weeks until I can get a lift up to collect it. I'll be asking all sorts of stupid questions on here once I get it home as it'll need a bit of disassembly to do the head races and to give it some fresh fork oil etc Happy Days Ahead!
Sounds like a better bet. Main connector on LH side will need a good look as they all do. I have an excel file with all ST4S torque ratings. Can you PM me?
