749 Crc Rear Tail Unit Fitted...,

Discussion in '749 / 999' started by Chris.King1, Apr 26, 2015.

  1. Finally got round to fitting the crc tail unit. Very lightweight and fits well, I would recommend this item, although it's not for everyone, I quite like it.

  2. Looks good, slightly different from the norm but still in keeping with the bike,is the seat material suede/alcantera ? quite like the subtle logo on it as well ....just had a look on their website they are quite reasonably priced....hmmmmm.

  3. Makes the bike slightly different to the rest, I like it.

  4. The seat material is a suede finish and fits onto the tail by 4 dzus fastners, Im guessing its gel underneath and then that sits on polymer base. The actual tail unit is exactly the same as a mono apart from the sides sits slightly lower down the subframe, but not by much. Reasonably cheap, but then you have to get it colour-matched.

  5. I like it I might look into getting one on mine.

  6. Nice . Do you think it's long enough to cover rear subframe on biposto ?? Different but I kind of like its sweeping lines

  7. I don't think it will cover the biposto frame, as it only just covers the mono. Unless you get a mono subframe

  8. Just acquired a used one of these, its being prepped and painted next week,i see its designed to fit the subframe at the sides where the small plastic covers usually screw in, have you had to use spacers and different screws when fitting it or do the OE bolts fit ?

  9. I sanded the lugs slightly as they were a little too long, but not by much. Also the lug that sits underneath at the rear I sanded down as it sat a little to high at the arse end.

I just used a nut through the sides and nyloc nut, although fiddly to get the nyloc on the inside of the subframe. I have since tapped the holes in the subframe so it just screws in now, very quick and easy to get on and off.

Buy a block of buoyancy foam to sit under the tail. If you sand it down just right then it takes all the pressure of the tail unit when your weight is on it.

Mine is very secure by the 2 side Bolts and the foam underneath. It has just enough give in it for it not to be too stiff and rigid which is what most people do and wonder why it cracks.

I would take some pics but I'm off on holiday in the morning, if I remember I can take some when I am back so you can see the set up.

  10. Forgot to say, you can use any screw that fits through the subframe. Just poke a pencil through the lug hole and see how far you want it to come out the other side of subframe will give you your length. I just bought some screws from Kay's of ebay, they have all sorts. Think mine were m8 which fits the subframe. I have no spacers as the crc lugs are plenty long enough and if anything just need a light sand.

    • Thanks Thanks x 1
  11. Thanks for that, i intended to fit rubber washers at all the mounting points for flexibility and to take some of the rigidity out of it, I like the idea of the foam though ...pics would be good if you get time to post them.

  12. Just made some carbon inserts for mine a few weeks back on my night shift...also finally vented the carbon shroud...think that's it for the arse end.

  15. Just got mine back from the painters ,any chance of a piccy of the foam block arrangement you used under the tail Chris?

  16. Sure...pic.1. Shows the top (circular edge is the bit that sits against the tank, or the front) pic.2. Shows the underneath and last pic sat under the tail unit.

I bought buoyancy foam as it's very firm but has some give in it.

Size of the foam block is L29cm x W19cm x D4cm. This block actually came in that size and I bought of ebay for under a tenner.

Firstly I cut the hole in the foam where the large middle lug under the tail is.

I then took a bit of the sides at the front areas on the topside as that is the curvature of the inside of the tail.

Then I marked on the foam at the top front the curvature of the seat and cut that off. You will have to make a bit more of a recess on the underside for the tank.

Then I began to shave off the bottom, more at the rear as the heat shield angles up and just kept test fitting until I didn't have to force the 2 side lugs to screw into subframe.

Basically concentrate on the inside curvature of the tail unit so it sits reasonably snug and get the topside of the foam to mimic it. Then worry about shaving off at the bottom at the end. A bread knife is good to use to whack larger bits of and then you can wet sand to neaten up. Remember you can't see this foam so I wasn't too precise and the idea is to soak up your weight on the road, bit like a damper. By doing that it takes all the stress out of the side lugs. And it's way more comfy than OEM. Sounds like a lot of work but it isn't, just shape, test fit, shape, test fit and you will be fine. Don't be too precise...it's just meant to soak up a little weight and not to carry all your weight.

  17. must be very light if it is lighter than the OEM mono,,,:)

  18. The whole tail and neoprene seat is lighter than the OEM standard seat alone!...and I mean just the seat excluding the OEM tail. I change between this set up and OEM and OEM makes me laugh at it's weight. Same goes for the headlight bucket, hence it was ditched!

  19. anything CRC is normally well though out/well designed - looks as good if not better than original unit.
