Screen Savers?

  1. I like the combat flight sims, flying early jets or WWII warbirds. These can get quite expensive and you'll need a stick throttle and a set of rudder pedals to get the best out of them

If its jets or a couple of warbirds DCS (Digital Combat Simulator) is good, you can download it and play it for free, you get a training version of the Mustang and the SU-25, for nothing its a good deal. Its also getting upgraded soon to better graphics. As you go you purchase additional aircraft, but if you are going to do that wait for the Flash Sales, usually BIG reductions. The models devalue quite quickly so some are good value, the latest models not so as they will be a lot more expensive.

ROF is a WWI flight sim which again you can download and try for free then purchase aircraft as you feel the need or want. The aircraft are now getting pretty cheap.

Finally IL2 BOS (Battle of Stalingrad) and the new add on Battle of Moscow, you need to buy it from the outset, but its got pretty stunning graphics.

If you just want something cheap and don't mind the poorer graphics IL2 Sturmovik, is an old game that's around a tenner, there are sites where modders have done a ton of work upgrading it over the years.

If you're interested in IL2 Sturmovik then PM me and I'll tell you where to buy it as some of the copies are partially locked and you need the CD, I found a site that gives you an unlocked copy and I can direct you to where all the upgrades are

These are just my personal faves, there is also and old game called Cliffs of Dover which is meant to be good too, but again suffers from game security on the CD and can be trouble to get going. Google any of these on You Tube and you'll see tons of videos to get and idea of the graphics

For fun here is a trailer for IL2 Battle of Stalingrad, its been tarted up. Below it is some battle footage from a multi player server event, not me unfortunately sent to me by a gamer much more skillful than I am, that's representitive of actual in game footage

Off Topic Ah'll get ma anorak

  2. Wow things have come on a bit. I got hooked on flight sims with a really simple mouse operated one called chocks away decades ago in the Archimedes 3000. Then a black and white one on an old Dell, then things like pilot wings on snes. Played a couple of app type ones in last few years. Got a macbook now but not put any games on it. Do you know if any of these are any good on mac?

  3. Sorry can't help on the Mac front as I don't have one.

I just did a google and see that DCS can be run on a Mac via Windows and BoS can be run using Wineport FrontPage - The Official Wine Wiki

As DCS and RoF are free to try and BoS seems to be able to run via Wine (maybe the others too), then it looks like there are workarounds, but most of these games are all Windows OS based.

As for IL2 Sturmovik and Clod, they are relatively inexpensive so if it didn't work you'd hardly be out of pocket. Suppose the only risky one is BoS which would be a bit of a bummer if it didn't work. However if you are interested in that I'd drop the developers a line explaining the situation and see if you could get a refund if it didn't work or ask about selling your key on, which I think can be done.

  4. Another vote here for Clod. However, only with the "Team Fusion" patch, makes it playable. Also, get a track IR, again, just more immersion. Then best joystick goes to a good old school microsoft force feedback 2. Then some simpeds or similar. Oh dear, I've turned into a saddo.

  5. @Archermav

Just as a matter of interest with Clod do you need to have the CD inserted when you're running it. That's what put me off getting it, bloody Ubisoft bought over all these old titles and when I got IL2 Strumovik (the old version) it would not let me run it, without the CD inserted which I hate. I eventually found a site that let me have an unrestricted (unlocked) copy but haven't seen any for Clod yet.

I try not to broadcast the fact, but too late I'm oot the closet, as I get the most pitiful looks if I tell people, usually accompanied by lots of head shaking. Flight sims are the only games I play, first person shooter games leave me cold.

This thread has taken a serious "off topic" shift and I apologize but I can't help it.

  6. Not sure on that one mate, I bought Clod on release so never really looked into that. My wife gives me pitiful looks when I'm flying, woops, playing. Head set on, joystick, pedals, track IR and I am Douglas Bader. Here is the best place for Clod Team Fusion Public Discussion

    However, back on topic!

  7. Last Off Topic Post..............promise before @El Toro has me bollocks in a vice

I have never played X-Plane seen some of the promo stuff, I believe its more akin to Microsoft's Flight Sim & less combat oriented, great if airliners are your thing, I just like flying the warbirds, not necessarily combat just taking off landing and navigation in them can be satisfying enough for me.

If you get it PM to let me know what you think and give me the lowdown, always interested
