Question is I sold my 1098S and was wondering what the power difference would be on the 848 is it better for road use or worse ?? I normally alway go for the more power option but would buy a 848 if not too different??? Cheers
I had a 1098S once. I got rid of it for two reasons, first it was just too much and I found I was going stupid fast everywhere and second where it had a 190 back tyre I found it did not turn in as nicely as the 848 and other bikes I had. I have the 848SF now. Yes its not as powerful as the 1098S but its still a 132hp bundle of fun with lovely handling....
You can hugely improve the slow steering of the 1098 SF with the right suspension set up. The 848 is sharper steering because it has different headstock geometry but don't let that be the deciding factor. Correctly set up the 1098 handles fantastically well and with the amount of grunt its got you appreciate the stability. You really need to test ride both bikes and decide which suits you best.
Ok its for Girls hay hoo and boo hoo on a serious note, wish I never sold my 1098s but its gone and you cannot get decent low milage /new ones hence the 848. I know what the 1098 is like just need a comparison on what the 848 is like power wise???? Is it like riding a ZX6 Vs a ZX 10 ???? someone must have been on both and have a honest comparison ??? Cheers Alan
I just got a 1390 mile mint one from a Ducati dealer for £8K only 2 weeks ago, fully serviced up too with 6 months warranty - there's a very cheap 1100S on Ebay now 5200 miles with no reserve on a Cat D - 5 hours to go and currently at £5800
Would a test ride on the 848 at a dealer be a possibility for you? This would probably help with some decision making.
Can not get a test ride in my local dealer in Newcastle they don't have any also trying to P/X my ZX 10 will 900 mile on !!:Banghead:
Test rode both (having had 990 Superduke R and BMW S1000R previously) and bought 848 version. IMHO, no real discernable difference in UK roads to warrant the price tag. 848 cheaper, lighter, lower insurance and better stock riding position. Yeah, lacks grunt on pure straight drag race (anyone can go fast in a straight line), so your sports bike chums will leave you, but you'll catch them back up on the bends. I worked out that if I lost a stone (which I did) it had the same power to weight ratio as the 1098 version....
I bought the 1098S Streetfighter because it's the bike I wanted at the time. If I'd bought an 848, I'd always have been looking at the 1098s and not been happy with my decision. The price tag didn't come into it. If I hadn't bought the 1098, I wouldn't have bought a bike at all. Whether anybody would really notice the difference on the road between the two, I don't know as I've never ridden the 848. But that wasn't why I went for the bigger bike. Call me a poseur, but I wanted the grunt, Ohlins, carbon, forged Marchsini's..........................
Rob I understand exactly what your saying I sold my 1098S and wish I had kept it. Problem is I cannot get another new one or mint low miler hence the 848 in the perfect world I would have another 1098S asap and yes Iam worried I will be thinking what you have just said mate looking back with regret !1 Guess I might have to hold on for the right one to come along
