Bought a 1200 S Touring from a good Ducati dealer in July with 18k on it and i see now that the left hand grip is almost worn right through, this is the first bike in over 20 yrs i have seen that extent of wear on a grip, especially a heated one. Do you think i would have any comeback in contacting Ducati and see what they will do? Or is it a case of forking out £200 on a new pair ( i prefer to keep it stock) or anything else that can be done?
Face to face with dealer; "I have a concern about the longevity of the hand grip that could wear & break my heated left grip. Meaning a nasty hit to my wallet. What can you do too help with my worries?" ..when they return push for a 50/50 share of new kit..
I can hear the wringing of the salesman's hands as he ever so 'umbly says "but sir, you saw the bike and had every opportunity to raise any concerns (before we took your money)". Sorry to be cynical but no harm in asking, they might surprise me. I am interested that your grip has worn so heavily, my 1200 will be 4 years old in February and I cannot remember in 45 years of riding ever having a grip wear out unless I ground it down the road but then that wrecked the clipon as well. Mental note to regularly inspect the grips. Andy
Mine were worn out at around 20K. I peeled off the rubber bits leaving the heating elements in place and replaced them Spidergrips SLRs. Spidergrips sell two RH rubbers to as replacements for the MTS ones.
Andy Next time i am at bike i will take a pic and let you see how heavy the wear is, i do think its starting to burst through, the fact its heated concerns me if the inner starts showing through!
Also replaced the grips with Spider grips at 22k miles - the peak versions Spider PEAK Grip — Spider Grips Easy diy job with a bit of help from google & youtube
I don't doubt you, a grip in that condition is not good and despite my cynisism, have a chat with the dealer, just because it was a used bike doesn't mean it should have been let out of the workshop in what, as you rightly believe, could be a dangerous condition. Andy
It's strange how synchronicity takes place sometimes. But this is one of those times, I've checked a draw for receipts of stuff added to my aging (whispered so not too arose attention) bike & I've added grip buddies from chain speed. You don't need to dismantle or lose heated grips though it takes a little longer. GRIP BUDDIES - Chainspeed Ltd So now you have an alternative tested by a forum member & they work with heated-grips all for £25. I added them because i too have worn down my grips on both sides but also wanted to enlarge the area for my hands.
Grip Puppies - Motorcycle Foam Covers Reduces Vibration fits over Heated Grips | eBay I use Grip Puppies. The foam grips make the bars more comfortable and larger (to fit my large hands), as well as protecting the OEM grips and heaters. If I fit them to a new bike, the OEM grips will remain in as new condition indefinitely.
Ive also done this mod, works really well and much cheaper than new heated grips from Ducati Indecently mine were showing bad signs of wear after about 7000 miles, but I do recall hearing somewhere that the early bikes heated grips did get replaced for better quality versions not long after launch, I think....?
Mine is a 2010 with, presumably, the early grips where the wire on the twistgrip side comes straight out of the grip and rotates with the throttle. I've seen later bikes with heated grips where the RH side has a slip-ring arrangement so that the wire doesn't move with the throttle. My Scrambler ones are the same as the early MTS ones.
Slightly off topic (sorry) but how do you find the scrambler Derek? What model do you have? Thinking of getting one as well....
I've got a Classic. I bought it for it's looks and the wire wheels; reminds me of the bikes I grew up with. It's small and light and great fun to ride. I have the Termi slip-on and it sounds terrific, far better than the Multi with it's full system (neither have the baffle in) The only thing that let's it down is the suspension which is harsh, but it is an entry level bike at a budget price so I can live with at. I've replaced the rear shock with a Matris unit and come the winter I'll most likely get a Maxton conversion to the front forks.
It's my LH heated grip that is wearing badly. Those spider grips, they say 2 X RH grips though? Is it just that they give you 2 RH as the diameter is bigger to go over the heating element?
yes the spider peak grips work fine - two RH ones because of the heating element girth cut the original ones with a knife slowly as its glued in parts to the plastic handle twist part. care not to go cut the elements....if you lift the edge of grip you can see and cut as you go. once they are off you will left with the plastic and the heating elements on the top.... up to you if you reapply glue to the new grips - i have not. just washing up liquid to help them go on. an air gun helps here as you push the new ones on as you can "balloon" them...else, just lots of washing liquid and patience and care about those heating fillaments. once they are on, it takes quite a few days for the washing up liquid to evaporate and them stopping rotating on teh plastic... the spiders seem to be ok on the wearing by the way, had mine for around 2 years so far. bugs
+1 on the Grip Puppies. My heated grips were wearing out at about 5k miles. £16, 21k miles and 4 years later, I'd forgotten they were fitted until I saw this thread.
Guys, Whilst I do know that the grip puppies option is a good one, why not try another option, one that I have used to brilliant effect having been advised about this same issue on my 10 plate Mutli and now used on my 15 plate Pikes Peak......"Simples" cricket bat handle rubber, it absolutely works perfectly, is really easy to fit and from one handle you can get two sets and at around £5, give it a go. You can also select various colour codes to suit your bike and if anyone is interested get back to me and I'll take a photo or two to show what it looks like
To my knowledge all the people that had grips replaced were due to the left one wearing severely. My 2012 (reg'd dec13) has the later style, and the left grip is really worn, at just 12k miles. I will be paying the dealer a visit to get it replaced under warranty, just as my 2010 bike had.
