Exige's Upgraded Battery & Starter Leads

Discussion in 'Technical Help' started by Old Jock, Sep 3, 2015.

  1. Didn't really know where to post this but thought this reasonable, no doubt @El Toro will move it if it does not belong

Arrived today. I won't be putting them on the 1098 until its off the road for the winter. As I understand he also has them available for a range of other models too.

However I was well impressed and want to try to get the word out more for how good these leads are. They exude quality are very well made and not only do you get the leads but comprehensive instructions, and some tie wraps and nuts etc: to do the whole job

Some may grumble that the price is too much (so what's new), compare them to the nearest offering from the US and you'll see they are an unquestionable bargain.

I'll leave it to @Exige to put up his current costs I just wanted to say thanks

  2. The clear plastic tube for the battery terminal bolts/nuts is genius.

  5. Fitted mine last week to 848. They're a great fit, care with orientation of positive terminal to solenoid (at solenoid end) as if you leave it pointing outward away from the bike the cable pushes out against the fairing. Also worth checking which way around the negative ends stack in top of each other before you attach to engine case as they are an 'exact fit', as described.

I didn't need any of the cable ties. The rubber tube things are great, worth noting that without them the terminal bolt won't reach the nut so dont attempt to leave them out. It won't work.

The pack included two small nuts... No idea what they were for!

There's no noticeable change to cold start up that I can tell however mines a low mileage bike with a good battery and I guess the old cables are still in good condition, either that or I've done something wrong. The new negative to earth cable is tucked under the old one at the terminal but the new positive cable is on top of the old one at the terminal.... Think this is how it is described in the instructions, would it make a difference which was in top of the other? Assuming electricity will just take path of least resistance whichever way they're arranged.

Anyhoo they're good quality and good fit :upyeah:

Edit: I say 'good' battery, having done some googling it's probably at the bottom end of good, reads 12.0 volts at rest, time for a new one?

  6. Some Ducati Solenoid threaded posts appear to be shorter than others so the thin nuts allow the first nut on the post to be replaced to give enough thread when fitting / piggybacking the new Solenoid to Battery Cable. I decided to put them in every kit just in case - I will amend the instructions to make this clear of leave out the nuts on the kits that don't appear the need them. I'll make the exit angle of the cables clearer too - thanks for this feedback.
The original terminal plates are less than 1mm thick - I contemplated going underneath on the kits but current flow through a 1mm thick section of existing terminal has no resistance and if going under on some applications then the original terminal bent wall would need filing. I felt it best to avoid any 'mods' to existing parts - hence the special terminals for the battery box exit.

  7. If your bike is new(ish) you just won't notice, but it will keep turning over the way its meant to with this mod installed.

I noticed the 1098 started to become really sluggish and got a new battery, still the same shit.

I installed a cable upgrade from an E-Bay seller who was cheap and the cables hefty, BUT the fit was rubbish, I had to bend a lot of the terminals and he must have used about a gallon of solder on each connection, pretty it was not. It also meant the starter solenoid no longer fitted snugly in its rubber sleeve and the cables at the battery terminals look pretty awful. They actually look like they were made from speaker cable.

Exige's on the other hand really look the business with the cables tailored for the 1098/1198/848 series, look at the long lead for the battery connection as an example.

However they all do the same sort of job and when I doubled up the cables I was flabbergasted at the difference it made to the starter, it turned over a lot quicker and the bike fired up very quickly. This is good news for starting reliability, battery, sprag and starter motor life. So long term they could save you a packet too.

I think the problem is Ducati use marginally sized/cheap cables and over time embritllement sets in, this ups the cable resistance and then battery and starter motor struggle due the volts drop across the cable.

Thanks @"Its_just_a_ride" for the words of advice I'll take heed

I found it was when I teamed a new battery with a cable kit that I got the real benefit :)

  11. Oh mine arrived Saturday morning, very impressive set, instructions seem to cover every eventuality and there's 'everything' and I mean 'everything' that you need to fit. Will fit them later in the month when I get time.

  15. COMPACT WEEGO JUMP STARTER | MOTORCYCLIST MAGAZINE

Makes you wonder why batteries are so big and expensive? although I suppose recharge time is an issue, but for the weight saving could it be possible to use one like this and put on charge once back in garage, wonder how many times it will start bike before flat?

  16. Have a quick search on here as the other threads on the same subject have some valuable information.

  17. Fitted mine today (1198s). Very good kit, it feels like a quality product. Started like a beauty, and launched a big smoke puff from the Akra's 4 feet into a pristine white sheet on the line.
My boy thought it was hilarious, the wife not so much.

  20. Should be a huge improvement.
You will still need a really good battery to get the full benefit though - a chain is only as strong as its weakest link and all that...
