Is It Just Ducati Or Is All Bike Depreciation This Obscene !!??

Discussion in 'Ducati General Discussion' started by Steve m, Oct 24, 2015.

  1. I bought the bike 5 weeks ago from a private seller , I've done just over 800 miles in that time ! ....does that make me a 'proper biker ' ...how bloody rediculous ! ....isn't every bike purchase a 'lifestyle thing' ??

  2. So what did you pay for it last month? and what would you expect to sell it for privately?

  3. The motor trade. Where profit is a dirty word and everyone is a expert on how much you should make. It's like any business if you don't like the numbers being quoted get another quote from elsewhere. If all the deals are similar then it's your calculations that are wrong not the dealers.

  4. Depends on how fast you did the miles, whether you got your knee down and if you are hairy enough:)

  5. Hmm.. Seems the trick here is buy from them but not sell to them.

  6. Ah! Yes I recognise them now. I saw a 1098S for sale there earlier in the year. It was a very good price. It sold before I had chance to ring. Stock does move quick.

  7. I can't see a reason for it being different now but car dealers used to have a 2nd hand goods scheme where they had to pay VAT on the margin made. So if buying for £7.5k and selling for £11k they'll lose £583 to HMRC straight away. Then they'll have to service it, and pay the cost of capital of holding it (at this time of year I guess they'll assume they'll have it until spring). So the £3.5k soon gets driven down and I doubt it'll be more than £2.5k that it actually contributes to overheads. You need a lot of £2.5k contributions to keep a showroom going...... Remember that this will probably be one of their more profitable bikes too.

  8. Is there a second hand vat payment for dealers still on the margin, anyone know?

  9. So true ! Many years ago I bought a GSXR1100F, did around 9000 miles in 8 months and sold it back to the same dealer. Went back around a year later and it was still sitting in a corner with a fine sheen of dust on it... bet they wish they hadn't taken that one !
Mind you they also had a second hand F4 serie Oro up for 35k that they couldn't shift either....

  10. dont know but there will be 20% of tax on the profit after the first 10k

  11. Normal HMRC clarity. You can "choose" to use a secondhand goods scheme...
    VAT margin schemes - GOV.UK
Not sure what happens if you don't choose to use the scheme as I can't see them just saying "that's ok keep the cash you'd have paid us".

  12. I assume your using the personal allowance as the £10k? Most dealers will be incorporated and therefore will pay tax on all profits as there isn't a tax free allowance for companies.

  13. Thanks - looks like 1/6th on the difference on second hand bikes then - although it says cars to begin with it mentions vehicles when you use the online tool
VAT when you sell a vehicle - GOV.UK

  14. The default position is that standard rated VAT (20%) is chargeable on all supplies of goods and services. There are various exceptions to this, one of which is traders buying and selling second-hand goods such as vehicles. If you don't choose to use a margin scheme (or don't qualify for its terms), then it's 20%.

  15. Yes, so 16.66% + a further 20% small business tax, + wages and overheads, servicing and warranty. It's a minefield out there ;)

  16. At 13500 new, whether it's changed hands or not then it's quite a drop to £7500.

However as others have said it depends how much they want it, ultimately I presume Riders already have a couple of others they haven't shifted yet so yours is likely to be punted to the trade, they make a bit and then the next dealer will try.

If you tried another dealer you'd probably get an increase depending what their existing stock is.

  17. How many miles are we supposed to ride a year to be allowed to be bike owners ????? How many do you ride? I don't put many miles on mine but I bloody enjoy any I do . If the op wants to put one mile a year on his bike that's his business .

  19. Perhaps the degree of depreciation is more to do with the fact that the new bike is not just a facelift but a complete new bike. If the 2015 was just a facelift then there would be little point in changing from a 14 bike, the price difference between a late used bike and the new one will have to be reasonable otherwise you would just pay the extra and have the best you can have for your money, a late clean low miles older model must be a much harder sell now.
