I have another question. I have a 996 engine which has been blue printed and rebuilt around a thousand miles ago and has only been used on the track. The guy I bough it from was meticulous with it and did oil and filter after every track day. The bikes been set up and has 125bhp at the wheel. Smooth power curve. Now I will soon have a 998 which has 7800 miles on the clock. Power wise should be around the same. Which would be the better engine for me to keep. The 998 along with electrics or the 996. I'm looking at long term reliability more than anything for road use with the odd track day. Any pros and cons on both engines. Also are the bottom ends the same?
That's not a bad idea but I took a deposit on my 1198 last night. One of the reasons I sold my 1198 was I was riding it too fast and needed to slow down a little.
And you think a 998 is going to be slower ? Good luck with that, my 748R was a real challenge to keep below 3 figures on the open road . Andy
Tims old 996 is going to be mint when I've finished her. Got a set of black and white bodywork for it should look nice with the black wheels and frame. I also had delivered today a foggy rep tail unit it's a DP one so good quality. Will have the choice of red or black then
Have you tried both? I've owned both a 996 and a 998 and in my experience they have completely different characters. Maybe it was just me, but I reckon if you like the 996 then you'll find the 998 too smooth, refined and lacking in rawness. Or maybe you'll try the 998 and decide that the 996 is too raw.
I'd prefer the 998 engine personally. Saying that, I've not ridden either. #uselesscontribution :tongueout:
I can't see how a 996 or 998 for that matter can match an 1198 in power. Pretty sure the 99x models are quite a bit heavier too.
I thought the post was not about going faster? if your not looking for performance, go with the newer motor and less mileage. If you are planning on blue printing, you are not really looking to slow down. If I wanted to go fast and was not about the character of the machine I would have stuck with a Jap 1000cc, cheap reliable and fast. R1 2008 won the private TT when newer motors were out. Most Jap 1000's 2006 on wards can make 200hp at the crank on stock parts with a good amount of tuning and still ride well on the road + have slipper clutches as stock I believe. A Ducati 748,916,996,998 is not about that for me..
