No, all that did was cost him lap times. The front runners putting in the faster lap times would have suffered more then him and they did report loss of grip in their post race interviews. Rossi got to 4th on lap 13 of a 30 lap race with lots of life in the tyres, once there the front 3 consistently pulled away from him.

By the time VR got to 4th he was nearly 12 seconds off Pedrosa who was 2 seconds off MM. VR would have had to have taken nearly a second a lap out of them to even catch and at huge risk of crashing doing so. He may well have not had the pace but it's equally possible and more likely he knew there was no chance of catching at the rate needed and his only chance was to stay on and hope MM and Pedro overtook JL. From what I saw Pedro would have had a shot at JL had MM not bit straight back. I'm not gonna get into whether MM was shotgun but Pedro has come out of this season with his repro seriously enhanced. Probably the only one of the top 4 to do so imo.
