I noticed it the other day when I was looking at the underside of the bike. There isn't enough oil spilling from the bike to leave any kind of pool/marks on the garage floor, but taking off the right fairing panel I can see the inside is coated with a thin layer of oily residue, so it must be only happening when up to temp and at speed. I'm fairly sure that it isn't coming from the bottom of the sump, despite recently getting the bike fairly high in the air (there's a post around somewhere explaining my unexpected flight), as the residue extends higher up the engine case. I cant really see any obvious origin for the escape, there's nothing running down the side of the oil filter and although there aren't any obvious signs, I think it may be coming from one of the nozzles hooking up the oil lines. I have uploaded some photos to show you so if anybody has any ideas, I'd be happy to hear them
Oil leaks can be tricky to find. I had a leak on my 916 after a service many years ago, it appeared to be the cooler but after much investigation turned out to be a cross-threaded rocker cover bolt (the extended one that holds the radiator in place). That said, that's a nasty scrape on the bottom of the sump, are you sure nothing cracked during the impact?
ive seen the oil cooler hoses be tight to the fitting but the actual fitting is loose. You need to slacken the running nut on the oil cooler hoses, check the tightness of the fitting into the cases, then retighten the oil hose. worth a shot
Thats what I was thinking, but it looks a real pig to get to Its just a scrape, its still oil tight. That was the first place I looked after I cleaned it up. I did run it for a bit, but couldn't see anything obvious. I quick ride to the dealer me thinks, but I think the guys at the dealership are getting fed up with me anyway, Im always there for a chat
Wash it all off totally clean and run it on a paddock stand or similar with the fairing off and watch for the drips to appear, as it is in the photos it will be very difficult to say for sure where the leak is because of the spread.
Yep, did that, nothing , well not that I could see. I'll take some more later and post them up
looks more like oil under pressure to get that far than just a leak like from the starter motor joint that is more of a splash...
Totally clean the engine and use some engine dye and UV light. UV Dye & UV Torch Kit Leak Detection Dye For Oil & Fuel Leaks RLD4 Ring | eBay This should show up the source of the leak.
i had a leak that plauged me for ages till i pinned it down to a hairline crack in the crankcase breather blowing a mist of hot oil but only when i gunned the bike on track or for long periods at hi revs on open road would it the oild show up in sufficent quantity to pool your looks like its more likely to be front of the engine rather than the rear so maybe a haline leak in one of the oil cooler lines maybe?
Mine had a leak where the actual pipe union had a crack in it. I naturally thought it was just loose!
Well after taking off the other fairing panel, getting on my hands and knees and cleaning of the remaining crap from the bottom of the engine I took the advice and run the bike for a bit on the paddock stand. Took about 10mins of checking possible suspects and then I found this Oil is seeping around the nut that is up against the sump, so I'm assuming just a re-tighten up to the correct torque setting and then Roberts your fathers brother unless of course there's a crack in there somewhere (which may explain why my fairing panels are sat in my living room at the moment
My SS is leaking there (848 oil cooler and hoses) am considering removing the hose union and replacing the useless alloy washer with a copper crush washer? The union is as tight as I dare? At least it wont corrode...
