So after this post here mentioning an issue I have with claim I started digging and found out what is the real problem. http://ducatiforum.co.uk/f45/insurnce-clim-issue-5134/ They do not want to insure me because of the mods I know it now. It has started even if insurance company does not say it they price you out. I called another broker that uses same underwriters and he told me that from this year in short no mods on bikes are accepted for fully comp insurance with their underwriters. He can not even quote me as he has to call them. From DI I received a offer of 850GBP for 3rd party fire & theft where last year it was 525 for fully comp for both bikes. FC is over 2500GBP with 2y NCB!! At the moment I can not ride as I can not get insured. So people in knowhow. What would happen if you did not declare all mods? I know the official line but in reality what would happen? Paint job, better suspension, better brakes, different light or replacement dash will not impact safety in negative way. If one had an accident how much of a chance would you have to win in court with insurance company?
you know the answer already Lucasz - almost certainly Insurance Void in the case of an accident and particularly a fatality. I remember the brother of a school mate running over and killing someone while drunk. The family of the deceased took out a private claim against the driver and he was given X years to pay - probably still paying now.
that said you enter a contract with them you declare what your bike is, they quote a premium, you stray from the contract you are not covered end of.
Thing is technically your insurance is invalid when no MOT yet by FSA rules it can only be made invalid if car was not road worthy at time of accident. Also that lack of road worthiness was main or contributing factor in accident. No matter what policy wording stipulates. I am trying to check fsa website for modifications but if vehicle is road worthy with modifications same rules should apply? Many mode, as you know, increase safety.
On the other end of scale you have no choice but to get insured to use vehicle. Sorry Andy but it seems like currently it is a weak excuse being that stickers or heat grips are considered modification which Wold invalidate your insurance then. How many fit heated grips and do not declare it, it's a modification?
Another thing then so why modifications like better brakes raise your 3rd party insurance cost? It will not cost more to sort out 3rd party's damage because you had brakes worth a grand or two?
Engine cc/compression increase (only mod that is not for safety in any way as it increases your top speed/acceleration), upgraded suspension, upgraded brakes and masters, different colour, Yamaha head light, digital dash, higher handlebars, few cf bits for looks, lighter rims, slip-ons (original cans not available), aftermarket carbs, aftermarket ignition (original not available), lighter clutch (alloy) and from there on we go in to proper silly bits like stineless steel bolts & fasteners. In reality aftermarket tyres as well and stickers.
Well I was never going to not declare the engine mods but rest is safety feature as much as anything else. Not to mention that even when I had all the mods declared last year in case of theft or my fault accident I would only be replaced/compensated to value of stock parts. As that is the case and they are not going to pay for mods why do they charge more for all of them. Engine mods might increase your risk but better brakes, suspension, lights, rims and brighter more visible paint job lower the risk. Andy simple as a copper on accident scene if you seen upgraded brakes and/or suspension would that be a negative or positive thing for the rider in your notes and simple why if you could?
Eh? i doubt many if any would know whats what.....on most or even all vehicles..... I think i said this before, but in my yoof, i stopped an escort that was racing around pssing everyone off, Insurance was a 1300cc, i knew the difference from that to a 1600cc kent engine.......that was fitted undeclared. hey ho And i agree re the 3rd party payout..... There is also an offence of making a false declaration to obtain insurance...
That would have been separate to anything his insurance would have paid out. While your insurance may be void to yourself due to undeclared modifications, it does not absolve the insurers from their obligations to any 3rd party claimants. Hence why insurance void is technically different to not having insurance at all.
Have you tried ebike insurance. I've got loads of modifications to my Monster, all declared, and my renewal just came through at £156 fully comp.
I'm with them, all mods declared and a multi-bike policy too, and for a good price. Can't fault them at the moment.
This is the part I want to establish as for now I only found comments about it so might just as well be urban myth. As said fsa website is quite clear that lack of MOT does not void insurance no matter what your policy wording states. Nothing there about mods as yet. My question was more if you were asked to asses vehicle after accident and assume you knew it inside out. If you spotted better brakes or suspension would that be a good point for rider or bad point? Thx re 3rd party. The offence of false declaration never heard of that. Will need to research. Gilps, Figaro thx will give them a try.
After my recent accident and claim my Multi was written off but I had forgotten to declare I had put the termi stubby on and also a top box, back and too with DI (Equity) but they were great as nothing was performance enhancing it didn't affect my claim and said if I can get down to the storage facility I can remove the extras and put the OEM stuff back on, so standard can on and the top box mount removed and paid out in a week. I guess it may depend on the mods
