Is This Worth Buying

Discussion in 'Newbies Hangout' started by grahamfirestorm, Nov 21, 2015.

  1. Hi everyone, just joined and hoping for some advice. Ive recently been to see a 1994 916 which the owner has agreed to sell to purchase a kawa z1b for a lot of money-5 fig sum to add to his collection of a 500 and 750 triples. This 916 has been extensively rebuilt with new crankcases to sp spec, pankle rods high comp pistons etc,and is in monoposto guise, and is truly immaculate almost like new, with 24000klm from new,it came from Germany originaly, and about 1200 miles since the engine rebuild by ducati John in Leeds.Every receipt for work done and servicing is present. My question is will this bike be less valuable than it should be because the new crankcases have no numbers stamped on them.Any advice welcomed.

  2. It's worth what someone will pay for it Dave. And welcome btw :)

  3. As El T says, it is worth whatever someone is prepared to pay for a bike. What it is not is an original 916 nor is it worth original 916 money. If you want to ride it, fine. If you are looking for a collectible, walk away. I infer from you description, the seller thinks very highly of what he has done but at the end of the day it is still a bitza, not a 916 of any released model. Andy

  4. thanks Dave,I don't think im paying too much for it,it comes with paddock stand, orig red front mudguard, socket for rear wheel nut, private plate with duc on it,ducati bike cover and it has ohlins rear shock plus more.

  5. So there's your answer Dave. Buy it. Ride it. Enjoy it. :upyeah:

  9. What its value is and what I would pay for it are probably miles apart. It is a nice spec but the seller should not expect to recover everything he has invested in its build. As you asked, I'd pay up to £3500. By the way, Ducati John has an excellent deserved reputation so the quality of work will be good and he is a member on this forum if you need to ask questions about the bike. I don't know how but I think you need to do something about getting a new engine number. Andy

  10. Thanks Chris, the last ducati I had was in 1982 a bevel 900ss which I bought off my old race sparring partner Eric Mcfarlane, which he campaigned in the Auto 66 club championship of 1981,and I still rate that bike as one of the quickest things ive ever ridden on the road, and they were supposed to be really fragile too.

  11. yes I agree about the engine no. bit,but im not sure how you do it,will make enquiries.Ive spoken to John in depth about this bike and he assures me it is absolutely spot on having had a lot of money spent on it,but he has advised me it isn't totally original with whats been done to it,but hes also said if I want a 916 without worrying about anything mechanical, then this is worth considering.

  12. Hello and welcome into the mad house

Follow your heart and you could haggle a bit depends how much you want it :)

  13. thanks Ducbird, weve already agreed on a price and im very keen to get hold of it,its absolutely stunning.

  14. Congratulations
Pics bikes and bins are the law don't forget :)

  15. Hi and welcome. As above, get some photos up if you go ahead!

  16. Buying as an investment is supposed to pay you (eventually). Buying to ride 'cos you like it is the other way round - you pay for that. If it's the former, this isn't the one, if the latter, and you want it, buy it, ride it and have fun.

  17. Yes I agree with you on that, the bike im buying is 90% original,it just looks like an sp,there are plenty of so called original 916s out there, many of them without service history and looking a bit long in the tooth, and I certainly woudnt buy one of those with the prices being asked for them.At the end of the day,i wont lose money on it,in fact it will appreciate maybe slightly slower than an original one but it will never go the other way,one doesn't see many 1994 916s around now.

  18. I've never bought any bike with a future sale in mind - at point of purchase I don't give an intestinal transit (© Activia) about potential future value, I buy cos its something I want enough to part with the cash agreed - I think the message you're getting from the forum could be summarised as 'Don't buy it as an investment, but buy it if it lights your fire' and from your last post it sounds as if you're going for it, so good onya

  19. Oh yes don't worry im going for it!

  20. So the original question was superfluous then? ;)
