hi guys got a question for you. Anyone know for sure if the frames are identical. I've a project almost in the bag and need to know for sure if I could transplant engines swing arms bodywork around ect. Please only post if you are 100 percent sure. Thanks Simon
If you really mean't to ask this as per the title 916 749 Ect Are The Frames Identical? Then no they're definitely not identical.
That was exactly my point Creamy wasn't sure if he'd realised. What exactly are you trying to do @Simon-Ducati
I prefer the look of the 916 shape and may have a 749 coming my way. So I'm wanting to know if the 916 bodywork swing arm and even the engine would fit the 749 frame?
Not in any way - different engine mounts, different electrical mounts, different body work mounts - different everything :smileys:
So what was the concept ? Is there an assumption that the 749/999 fame is better than the 916/748 family ? Or is it that you have enough bits of a jigsaw to make your own picture ? Serious questions Simon because I'm facnated by other peoles concepts. Andy
Engine mount are the same, from 748 right up to 1198 (including 749/999). Swingarms on 749/999 are twin armed so fitting a 748/916 or even an 848 or 1198 swing arm is a pain - but doable. Later 998 (and 996R) frames (post 2001???) and 748R frames are deep V/ kyalami. This means that the center section braces are in a deeper v (below the airbox.
One thing I'm sure of...... the numbers are different on each one. If you find two frame numbers the same then start looking for two engines with the same number. Half price insurance and tax/mot however twice the chance of a speeding ticket in the post.
Basically your 998 has a similar Testastretta engine that you'd find in a 999... so in some senses the bike you already have is a factory version of the one you're thinking of building The 916/996/998/748 style bike is very different to the 999/749 shape. The Testastretta engine is the closest common element.
