749 Starting Problem

  1. I have a strange problem with my 2006 749.

It starts totally fine every day cold hot warm damp whatever. BUT!! If I ride the bike and say pull in for fuel or stop the bike it will not start if the bike is over 70 degrees???? When you press the starter nothing happens no pump prime no starter nothing. Wait a few mins for the bike to cool press and she is away! Battery is in good order. I've replaced the starter solineod and made sure connections r tight and clean.
This is a real pain in the Arse as if the bike stalls in traffic as ducati's like to it won't re start. Please help?!?

    Wow, that is weird...

  3. Could this be another manifestation of the infamous relay problem?
A relay is electro mechanical, so could the relay be sticking when hot but freeing up when it cools.
    Worth a try ...

  4. ^ yes, it's highly possible, have had a starter solenoid misbehave in a similar way but that was the 'hitachi' type with the round yellow sticker on it and I think people have mentioned relays behaving in a similar manner.

  5. I'll try that for sure you don't happen know where that rely is on the bike and what one you have to replace it with?

  6. Thread moved to correct section

  7. Relays are generic and universal. Just go to Halfords or wherever with your existing one and match it up.
Murphy's Law dictates it'll be the one on the inside of the battery box, which is a bugger to get at.
Usual advice is to relocate it to the top of the battery box where you can get at it and where it's better protected.

  8. Ok I'll try that this weekend thanks for help I hope that does something. It ruins going out for a spin when you can't turn of the bike unless you r stopping for 10 mins. I just need to move a really cold country were the temperature on the bike will stay low.

  9. Fingers crossed :)

  10. There are all sorts of temperature captors and whatnot as well. Could be one of them has failed. Bound to be some sort of electronic gubbinery.

  11. Reading your symptoms again, the fact that the pump isn't priming is a very useful clue and a 749 expert could narrow this down undoubtedly. It sounds like one of two basic ignition relays which are pre – starter solenoid.

  12. Going to change those relays and possible put in new battery, let's hope it isn't anything bigger and more expensive!!!

  13. I shouldn't worry about the battery for now if it still starts okay from cold as that's a really positive indication going by current temperatures :smileys:

  14. Possibly another random gremlin that can happen across nearly all the bikes – when you go to start from warm/hot, are you saying there are no indications on the dash whatsoever i.e. - electrical system appears to be totally dead?

My SS used to do that. It was down to poor contact between the relevant fuse and the fuse holder. I eventually managed to cure it by ensuring the fuse holder contacts made firm, flat contact with the fuse. It's important that the fuse itself is nice and flat to ensure maximum contact area.
I've had no such problems with my 999.

  16. The dash lights up and the pump primes and it makes a collection of the normal noises but when you press the starter nothing no click no starter nothing then that nasty orange engine light comes on!! I'm presuming it's something to do with temperature as it seems to fire up when the temp drops below 70???

  17. Hang on - pump does prime??

  18. Not the relay then. Could be related to the stand/neutral/clutch switches or the immobiliser.

  19. Does the EOBD light stay on if you switch the ignition off then on?

  20. Definitely said no pump prime in the original post...
    :/
