If buying off fleabay check with seller that the bikes groupets (brakes/gears etc) are correct for the bike. I.E. not off another nicked bike and bolted/taped/glued on to another nicked bike/frame. I could fill this forum with people bringing in bikes 'that I got cheap off net' with components from at leaast 6 different bikes from 4 different style of bike - hybrid - road - MTB etc.
Just buy a new one. At this price point you will get a bargain with up to do date tech in a sale. Don't buy a old 26inch wheeled bike from eBay as its really not worth it now as they are already old.

If you buy a decent brand bike you wont go wrong and you will get one within budget,ok it wont be a superleggra but a 749 would be good enough for most.

If you buy a second hand bike and it has faults you will never hear the end of it. Not worth the hassle in my opinion unless you know what u doing.
I got my mrs a halfords special. Cost me £210 from £500 using my work discount. It's a great bike in my opinion and I'm a bike snob. Only downside is that it's carrera which isn't fashionable
