Oil Filter Removal - Best Tool?

Discussion in 'Technical Help' started by NeilH, Nov 15, 2015.

  1. Hi
Is there a consensus on the best tool for loosening the oil filter? Seems to be a choice of a socket, strap, chain or adjustable arm grabber.
The filter on my 600ss doesn't look like there is much to grab.
    Thanks in advance
    Neil

  2. Socket. Won't dent or distort or mark the filter and better feel of how much pressure you're applying.

  5. I had to buy one of these for 996 as nothing else would fit. uploadfromtaptalk1447613923408.jpg

  6. Is use one of those on my 916/tt600-no issues.

  7. And they double as wrist/ankle restraints so they're always useful, whatever hobby you are indulging.

  8. and if things don't go to plan i.e someone has overtightened
the filter it ends up like this Photo0240.jpg

then you have to make a special tool like this

my first tool snapped as the filter had been tightened way to tight second tool works a charm

  12. I use these now . It saves on any problems removing as there is a large nut on the bottom which is aso used for lockwire .

  13. Thanks - I found the 'oil filter horror' thread which is partly why I asked the question! Think I might go for the strap and apply with fingers crossed!

  14. Looks a bit cheap

  15. 5 or 6 oil changes and your into proffit .

  16. I take it you just buy the insert?

  17. No you wash it . Paraffin bath .

  18. Well just to finish off the original question I bought a metal band wrench strap thing (nice bit of kit for £5 for Amazon). Filter came off easily. Only issue was I bought a 24mm socket (didn't have one) only to discover the bolt with the oil pressure gauge attached wasn't where the gauze filter was located! (Haynes manual seemed to suggest it was). Oil and filters changed / cleaned and all working.
    Thanks for the advice (again!)
    Cheers

  19. Just tried all to remove oil filter on my lowrider but all very tight and tight on space so bashed a hole in it with an old screwdriver and unwound it off! Sweet as

  20. Yeah. Tried that technique and all that happened was that the screwdriver tore round completely, removing the visible bottom half of the filter.
In the end I got it off with a pair of long nose circling pliers and a ring spanner, cursing the ape who'd put it on last!
PS successful technique suggestion came from this forum. Good people here.
