1299 1299 Respray

  1. Yo Guys. Well I couldn't wait till the bike has had its first 600 mile service, The weather is holding that back, with it only clocking up 500 miles so far,so decided to crack on and get it repainted, the same as my 1199.
Put it up on paddock stands, and started to remove the panels.
First the rear section. This is different to the 1199.and is in 4 parts, which has helped with the lines I am going to follow.
Then off with the lower fairing, then middle section, then finally the nose section.
The nose is quite tricky to take off, but with a bit of searching, you find out what holds it on.
The bike was then wheeled round the back of the house, and now sits in the dining room waiting for its new party frock.
First to prep ,then prime was the nose section. I'm keeping the original red, so only a white to add to this.
Next the rear, again keeping some of the original red, and original decals. Made my first cock-up on one of these with a run, so had to rub it down and start again.
The 4 side panels next, primed and then base coated white.
This time it seems so simple, and so fast.
All the panels are now sitting in the lounge, and I decided to add the decals. First the TIM sticker, and then the pinstripe. Kin eck it looks good !!! Just the gel coat to add to this, and its finished !!!
Next I have marked up the panels ready for their next colour.
Black for the bottom of the lower fairing, then silver on the top of the upper, and rear/seat sections.
I have also added the large Ducati stickers to the upper panels. I again kept the original Panigale 1299 decals on this..
So hopefully tomorrow, i can do the next bit of spraying.
The garage door is looking a little dusty, as you can see, I sheet off the front of the garage with the door open to get natural light in, and have heaters blasting away. Temp in there is around 25c.
Total spend so far is £150
    Hours spent so far 8
I thought I did a good job on the 1199, but this is amazing. I aint going to make a shyte job on a £17K bike. Cant wait to get back from work tomorrow and carry on. 3. Going to be watching this thread with great interest. Can't wait for more updates :upyeah:

  4. Looking great so far, going to be doing my track panels over the winter. What paint primer etc are you using, and what process are you going through with rubbing down, grits of papers etc ?

  5. Very good share

  6. Got held up by work today, so can only do one set of spaying.
I wont put anything on top of fresh paint for at least 12 hours. IMAG0708.jpg IMAG0710.jpg IMAG0711.jpg
So, first I added the silver stripe to the rear panels. The pic shows them with the second section added. I have to then spray the inside of these . Not sure what colour yet, will be black or white. I need to fit them on the bike, and see what looks best. The back end is quite different to the 1199.
Next the silver was added to the top of the mid panels. The stripe will continue in red, that's tomorrows job on this panel. These will be complete bar the clearcoat after that.
The lower panels now have the black band on. I have to leave a 10mm white stripe above this, then add a silver band, the same width as the black.

  7. Hi.
I first used scotchbrite on the surfaces before any coating. Also tried to get any wax off with hot water and detergent.
I use 1500 grade wet/dry when I do any rubbing down. I just do this to take off any high spots.
The paint is from 'Bike Colours' I was recommended them by a friend who was a car sprayer. I think its a good quality paint, and goes on so well, being it is in an aerosol can.
Also it aint so cheap, but then it aint going on a cheap bike. I did my 1199 first as a practice, and the finish is as good as the original paintwork. I didn't spray the tank, as I kept that the same colour.
After the clearcoat/ laquer has been done, I leave it for a few days to fully harden off, then spend a long time polishing getting everything flat.
It makes all the difference, but for a track bike, then its up to you. I did it on mine to see how good I could get it. If I wasn't 100% happy with it, then I wouldn't be doing the 1299 .
One thing, its good fun and so satisfying. Should all be complete by the weekend, or fitted ready for polishing. I prefer doing this on the bike, as things are a little bit more solid when bolted down.

  8. Checking the rear, for what colour to paint the inside. Think white to keep it bright.
Shit, it looks good !! So pleased. !!!!!
Lower panels marked up for the 70mm silver band.
    Ready for tomorrow.

  10. Yeh, and he aint fell off his !

  11. you know what they say mush, there are two types of biker, those who have fell off and those who are going to fall off

  12. Yo Wayne. I had a goodun, when I was 23. [ A while back !!! ] Slid off at around 60 in jeans and T shirt, just popping to the cash machine. Broken toe, dislocated shoulder. And loads of bones missing flesh. Who needs X-Rays to look at ya skeleton ? Had 3 weeks off work, and it was summer. How lucky is that !!!

  13. Day 3 and just a few more jobs done today.
Firstly adding the Silver stripes on the lower section. Then the red and green small in-fills.
Then spraying the red band at the top of the upper fairing. I'm not so sure this looks right at the mo, so will offer it up to the bike tomorrow, and see if I need to add a black section to make just a straight band. The fairing is different to the 1199, so things don't quite match up the same. Needs a bit of thinking this one.
Next I added a few decals on the lowest part of the fairing. I'm not a sticker fan, but these just break up the plain colours.
Finally I have clear coated the nose fairing. I wasn't sure how it would take to the original red of the bike, so first I did a test on the original red front fender. But everything came out well.
So the nose has had 4 coats tonight. This can now harden off for a few days before I start to polish it.
Not long till its finished, and I get my 1199 back from its service in a day or so.
Hope the weather is ok at the weekend for a photo shoot. IMAG0715.jpg IMAG0716.jpg IMAG0717.jpg

  14. youve painted both your bikes while them tossers have had mine

  15. Yo Guys
Last night I clear coated the rear sections, and the lower fairing.
I did a little bit of touching up on the upper section, so couldn't clear coat them, and also wanted to see what it looked like on the bike first anyway.
So today I fitted completely the rear sections, and fitted the seat back on. Tricky getting the seat release mechanism on, as its a bit fiddly. Got some choice words shouted at it !! That does the trick !!
Then fitted the nose section. Again a load of Fs and Bs thrown at it, which helped it on.
Loosely fitted the side fairings to see what it looked like, and see how the silver stripe looked like.
Didn't like that, so have made a mod to this.
So tomorrow, just a final clear coat to add to the upper fairing, and all the spraying is complete.
Then wait a few days and start to polish to get the best finish.
So hopefully a photo shoot Sunday with both Pani's , as long as the weather is ok. IMAG0718.jpg IMAG0719.jpg IMAG0723.jpg IMAG0720.jpg IMAG0721.jpg

So total cost has been £150
    Time taken approx. 24 hours.
