Another Thieving Insurance Co.

  1. I take it back, just googled it and if £500,000 is deposited with the government then they are covered for third party insurance under section 144 of some act.

This was taken from some legal(ish) website.
An important point to note with Section 144 exceptions is that the £500k has to be physically deposited with the Accountant General. The exception is not provided if the vehicle owner simply “ring fences” it or just proves that he has the cash available. Furthermore, the deposit is required per vehicle so somebody using S144 to avoid insuring “ a fleet of supercars” will face losing access to a tidy sum.

  3. Hmmm OK man. Maybe we should take this element offline. PM or summat. You know how it is, different people different experiences.

  4. I believe fire services etc do not carry insurance nor do they post a sum of £500 thou per vehicle .

  5. No private insurance company can insure the British government. The government has to carry its own risks.

  6. That obviously still applies where the government has sold on its buildings to a private management firm - said decision having been made by the head of said department who then went on to hold a non-executive directorship in the private firm said head of department sold the buildings to.

    But I digress.

  7. But can they still get European cover :0)

  8. Yep, it's called the Civil Service Gravy Go Round. Standard fare for all Government depts, with the biggest proportion of course allocated to the NHS.

But i digress as well lol.

  9. OK, here's an update. I took the advice of Pete 19whatever with regards to having a 'black mark' put against my name with regards to further insurance and paid the £35 when I received the invoice as requested. I payed on the phone and made it clear that I was unhappy with both the fact that I would not receive any refund from the cancelled policy and that my card was used without my consent I also told the 'very helpful' Mamet of staff that I intended to take my complaint to the ombudsman. Today I received a letter from their customer relations department informing me that they had investigated the case (obviously instigated internally) and that they had found they had acted correctly during the process. It then went on to say that as a gesture of goodwill they were refunding the £35 admin fee and that as they had not escalated the case after my initial complaint about them taking the money from my card they were giving me a further £50 compensation. So although I had made my dissatisfaction clear to just two members of staff it seems they upped the anti, reviewed my case, found that they had acted as according to their policies ( the letter points out all clauses) they could have just said 'sorry but that's the way it is' they actually gave me more money back that I should have received from the cancelled policy. So I say fair play to Hastings.
