Anyone else suffer from the wobbles at naughty speeds? was considering fitting a steering damper and came across an expensive Ohlins option for the MTS ÖHLINS steering damper kit for Ducati multistrada 1200 [ÖHLINSmultistrada] - €812.43 : Race-Pro.nl, Race-Pro :: Race & Track :: SBK & Moto GP Anyone fitted one or gone down this route?
Hi, yes to wobbles, but that was only once the rear tyre had started squaring off, I think with the long travel suspension it magnifies the problem, also I firmed the rear up because i think it was the rear squatting which started the wobble off, now its a huge improvement, hardly ever does it and it never gets to the stage of needing a damper. My next stage is taking it a suspension expert, getting it all checked out and refreshed I think!
This was a question I asked the dealers when I took the multi on a test ride back in 10 I found then that I was getting shimmer on the front on a downhill fast left and right (into 3 figures) at that time there wasn't anything on the market, as the front was loaded being downhill and bendy roads I didn't think that altering the rear would make that much difference going quicker does seem to clear it.
Mine does the same. I only notice it when I'm WOT around a ton going in a straight line. I've never had it shimmy when the fronts loaded. If the steering damper didn't cost an arm and a leg I'd consider it. If I was taking it to the track a lot, I'd want it fixed.
Has anyone here fitted one of these. I've just treated myself from WRS in Italy, unfortunately they haven't included any instructions! I think I replace the risers on the forks with the fitting kit ones....LOvely bit of bling. Vering / voorvorken : Race-Pro.nl, Race-Pro :: Race & Track :: SBK & Moto GP
+1 to seeing a suspension specialist and getting it set-up for you. Another worthy (and cheap at £250) upgrade is the Ohlins ECU active. It's really rather good and on a short ride against the Skyhook I could only notice a small difference in dive under braking. I have a 1200ABS but tweaked to suit me and can't say I've ever had any high speed wobbles on it.
I think I was the first to fit and test the Ohlins ECU active on this Forum and I love it. No issue with setting up the steering damper, just fitting it. You know how important the torque settings are on this bike! Got on into a bit of a wobble over a small hump back at speed, but no where near as bad as the fireblade I was following! Still no one else has this ?
the basic ohlins damper is expensive but frankly low tec. I would urge you to look at a reactive type such as... hyperpro reactive matris reactive or any reactive type lots of info online and better units altogether
Mine does it a bit at higher speeds, have noticed its worse with a barn door of a screen (MRA) fitted as opposed to a cut down standard screen. Guess its only to be expected when pushing that much frontal area along at a rapid rate of knots!
Lay blanket over tank, remove handle bar clamps (x4 bolts), remove bars and lay on tank. remove risers (x2 bolts). Fit new billet risers (as these have bracket to hold Ohlins damper). Fit Ohlins damper (x2 bolts). Fit fixed point billet'ed clamp to above steering lock. Then two people to joint Damper to fixed point. A bit fiddly. Then re-attach bars. 0-25Nm and 10-50Nm torque wrench required. Took above 3hours, but mainly as the billet risers were way too tight on the new mounting rubbers and needed honing down. I think it was due to the anodise finish. No instructions from WRS, total cost was about 600Euros. If the risers were correct then about 2 hours.
I cannot seem to be able to add that to the cart on that site. Do you know if its available else where?
Did a short test drive to Wimbledon in rush hour traffic, so that's not much fun even on a mutley. I've set the bars too far forward, despite my pencil marks. Going to rotate them backwards, then off to Exmouth for the day, 6 hour round trip so a better report to follow. Note I purchased the Öhlins from fleabay, not the Web link above.
