Had a cutting out issue with my 2011 Multistrada 1200 touring today. Close to where I live there is a near empty road next to a new motorway that sometimes I open the bike up on, well today took it down there and after checking the road was empty opened the bike up (not up to the rev limiter) but flat out in each gear when in 4th or 5th the engine just cut, the dash was still on but no drive at all. Kept going down the gears and the engine was turning but not firing and I eventually came to a stop. Checked the side stand was fully up (it was) and pressed the starter and it fired up. Rode it steady and everything appeared fine, engine smooth gearbox fine everything as normal, did 4 or 5 miles steady riding all fine. Thought I would repeat the original bit of road; again to see if it was a one off, opening it through the gears to about 9K. again in about 4th or 5th with the speed rapidly building the engine again cut, dash still on revs and speed still showing. Kept the throttle open still but going down the gears as the speed quickly dropped off then in second gear the engine cut back in again with no warning like flicking a switch, had the throttle open (sports mode) and the bike took off like a scalded cat scaring the hell out of me! For me there is a major issue here, I do not want to be overtaking a line of traffic and the bike suddenly die when hard on the throttle. I suspect the bike would need to go on a dyno to recreate the problem as normal steady riding will not make the bike cut out. Any ideas anyone? By the way the tank was half full and was last filled with Shell petrol. The bikes still under warranty and has 12500 miles on and had it from new so arranging to get it back to the dealers :frown:
Jeez, sorry I can't help with a solution and have not heard of that before. But for reasons that you have explained that is a serious safety issue. I would not be happy with that until the reason for it is explained and fixed.
Straight to the dealers!. Im not sure but the ECU MAY record an error code which may give an idea as to the cause. This as you have recognised, a serious issue!
Mine used to cut out at speed but your symptoms seem more specific than mine, which would happen randomly (very exciting mid corner)
I did wonder if it was fuel starvation as it only happens when the motor is under full load and spinning hard but it's strange how it suddenly cut back in in second so violently that momentarily the front wheel was coming up, scary when you think you are just breaking down to a stop. best bit about it I had just called in at the dealers to have the drive chain tensioned and they had told me to expect a recall letter to have the anti-freeze / coolant replaced but could not do it yet as the new coolant had not arrived yet.
I would suggest that you take your bike to your dealer and get the engine cut off switch/starter switch replaced under warranty. Mine did the same thing at speed on the motorway. Hope that sorts it for you.
I got had the same problem, turned out to be a faulty side stand switch believe it or not, replaced under warranty.
I had the same problem and they replaced the kill switch unit (new one has a bright red switch - ugh!) and the side stand cut out switch/sensor.
I would report back as to what the problem was but its now chopped in to a Triumph dealer, they are aware of the problem but anyone buying used Red Multistrada 1200ST that still has my private plate on UF0.... check with the dealer that it's been fixed. Paid to extend the warranty just before I sold it as well
Hey there Richard, I've got exactly the same problem with mine, i nearly shit ma pants tonight when i was out having a blast, what was the fix mate? i see someone else said poss stand and kill switch...
Dawg, were you at bike fest at the weekend? Somerset's a fair old trip! Only reason I ask is I spotted an identical helmet to your avatar, can't be too many of those around
Happened to me. It's the side stand switch sticking, rather than faulty. Took it apart, applied WD4 and ACF50 liberally to the switch and block connector. Cured it. High speed cut out scared me shitless!
Happened to me several times on French motorways last year, just cruising along at about 90MPH and the bike went dead. It was a total electrical shutdown, drifted over to the hard shoulder and it started on the button. Got it going and it did again a couple of times. Eventually we pulled the main fuse and disconnected anything electrical we could think of, Sat Nav etc. After this it died once more whilst riding round the car park and was then totally fine for the rest of the trip. We went into the Ducati dealers in Toulouse but the diagnostic equipment couldn't discover any faults that had been recorded. Since then it was totally fine!
Ordered side stand switch and kill switch today, both parts under £100 inc vat so here tomorrow will post results, lots of talk about these 2 parts giving problems....
If you read the post above your question.... old post from 2012, bike gone. Currently riding a slightly boring 2015 Versys 1000 GT......totally reliable mind.
