Extended warranty

Discussion in '848 / 1098 / 1198' started by Maccaa, Mar 27, 2012.

  1. Hi,

Wondered what the general thought are on the extended 3rd year warranty?

I have a 1198s bought new from a dealer last year (appreciate its a 2010 model, but thought the sp was a step (and price) too far), and need to decide within 18mths to extend that warranty.

Is the warranty price negotiable? and what are peoples general thoughts on this. I fully appreciate if I had a "shed load" of money , self insurance is always the best, but I don't.

    Thanks

    Maccaa

  2. It's a tough one Maccaa because if nothing goes wrong with your bike in the 3rd year it's a waste of money but on the other hand if there's an expensive issue it will be a wise investment.

I've got a 2010 1200 Multistrada & decided to take the 3rd year extension out. In the UK the cost is £300 which was not negotiable.

Only time will tell if it was worth it!

  3. I don't see it that way myself, but that's the point, people differ in their risk aversion. So, how risk averse you are should determine how wise the policy is for you - rather than a percentage calculation on how likely something is to go wrong. That is, if after a year of the policy nothing happened, you might choose to think, not "damn, money down the drain", but "well, that was still money well spent because I didn't spend every ride dreading something would go bang". In other words, if you're of a fretful disposition, then you pay for peace of mind.

  4. Prices aren't negotiable they're fixed. I got. About 2 months to decide to do mine or not. Think I will

  5. Thanks guys for the input,

I will get a price when I drop into JHP. I think its something I will go for.

  6. How many miles do you do per year and how do you ride it and how long
do you keep your bikes for.

  7. Hi Brian91cfr,

To be honest my mileage is very low, but with my last bike (Aprilia) lack of use was almost as bad as a lot of use (ohlins seals seemed to go more if they weren't used) and the coolant impeller was prone to leaking with lack of use.

Riding is "spirited" but not "brain out" and would like to look into doing a couple of track days , as its quite apparent thats the only place you can get anywhere near the potential of the bike without a jail visit.

Last Bike was 6 years, one before that 4 years. As it stands my 1198s a keeper, personally I like the trellis frame, U/S exhaust and open clutch. Also at 6'6" the longer reach is actually better for me than the shorter (reach) Panigale.

  8. Hi,
    *
I trust you’re making the most of the nice weather in October and getting plenty of use from your Ducati ?!
    *
Just a quick reminder to let you know that you have the option to extend the factory warranty from the standard 2 years to 3 years (unlimited mileage).
    *
Far from an aftermarket warranty or insurance option, this is an extension to the full factory back up you have with your new Ducati.*
    *
With the excitement of your new bike it may have been overlooked. So here is a reminder of what is available.
    *
For your bike to qualify it needs to be no older than 18months (yours is within this period) and have been serviced according to the correct schedule. (again your bike qualifies)
    *
    The prices:
    *
    Superbike (848, 1098, 1198 all version)
    Multistrada 1200 (all)
    Streetfighter (all)
    Diavel (all)
    £299.99
    *
    Monster 1100 (all)
    Hypermotard 1100 (all)
    £199.99
    *
    Monster 696
    Monster 796
    Hypermotard 796
    £149.99

    That's the prices I got.

    Matt

  9. If it was me i would just keep the 24 month standard warranty.

    brian.

  10. Ducati will have a warranty returns list for all problems and the mileages they typically occur at. That would tell you how much value for money the extended warranty is likely to be.
The famous breakdown was the radaitor leak, which I suffered on my 2010 848. As the rad was £600 to replace it puts the £300 extension into perspective.
Speaking to my dealer, nothing huge seems to go wrong, but there was a noise coming from the top end (which could have been expensive) as I traded my 848 in with 10k miles. Typically, accurate warranty data is hard to come by outside of the company, for obvious reasons, but I guess there are enough people on this forum to provide a pretty good understanding of all the biggies out there. Now if someone wanted to set up a list with the headings, Model, Problem, Cause, Mileage, and everyone contributed, we would have a 'ready reckoner' of what to expect in the future.

  11. Though of course Ducati sorted those outside warranty as a goodwill gesture because they recognised the oe part was generically faulty, so it's not analogous to a typical warranty claim.

  12. Out of interest did Ducati cover the labour on this, or was it just parts (when out of warranty)?

  13. The thing is if you have your bike serviced and bought from the same dealer and you dont take
the extra 3rd year if some thing went wrong as a good dealer they should put in a goodwill claim
on your behalf if its a known concern, or at least try on your behalf suppose it all depends
on the relationship you have with your dealer to.

    brian.

  14. Does this apply to the MTS only though, or the entire model range? Ducati could be shooting themselves in the foot if they didn't offer some kind of extended warranty. I wonder if this is something to do with the pending sale of Ducati?

  15. Good question to which I don't have the answer - it's a possibility that this may only apply to the latest 'high tech' offerings from Ducati (MTS12, Diaval, Panigale) but who knows?..........someone needs to have a chat with their Dealer next time they visit and ask for them to get a definitive answer from DUK

  16. I extended the 848. It's been 100% perfect for first 18months but thought it was worth it just in case

  17. For ~£200, I would extend my M1100evo warranty as well. I value my peace of mind...

I took out extended warranties on my last 2 bikes (both Kawasakis), and the 'K-Care' warranty helped keep their resale values up as well, probably more than I paid for the warranty itself.
