Bacon Butty at 07.00, outside the roads were dry so garage door up at 0755, covers off. Left her on the drive for 5 mins warming up, just so the neighbours could feel part of the occasion, then off out to put a few more mile on the youngster. Still stuck at under 6000rpm - but empty roads, full leathers and summer gloves in December was awesome fun.
So how many miles have you done now? I am up to the grand total of.......135! It was still wet here early on, so I got out and about at about 11 o'clock, by which time all the world was up and out doing last minute shopping. 'Twas nice and quiet in Rutland though.
Ha, a massive 124. I have 10 days off over the break, looking to get a further couple of hundred on. Would like to get the first service in the bag some time in Feb, before everyone takes the covers off and are looking for their seasonal refresh.
Just wondering, as running in is all about bedding bits in and heat cycles and things I don't fully understand, is there an optimum time frame? Is it better to do 600mls in 1 go (nice 12 hour ride), or over a week, or does it not matter if you do 50 mls every other month and it takes a year?
ride the bike who cares, you may as well use it you get fkd when u p/x anyway, far better use as normal as daft little 10 mile runs .pointless putting your gear on,
Typically, bike/car running in should have a variety of engine speeds, gears and loads, so if, for example, you sat on the motorway at a steady 50mph in 6th for 600 miles, it'd not run in as well as if you used a variety of rev ranges and throttle openings in each gear. Whether you do that in one go, or 10miles a day for 60 days, is largely academic as long as the bike is warmed up properly before every ride.
600 miles or 620 as I was told, (not sure what the 20 is all about) is a pretty arbitrary figure, its most probably about done by 2-300 miles. I am going to assume the whole running in thing wraps up the entire bike, brakes, tyres, engine, and anything else that needs a little bedding in, a number of miles gets the rider in tune with the bike. Perhaps 5-600 miles is required so that when the first service happens it is enough time for the bike to throw up any potential failure and provides Ducati with a mass controlled mechanical survey, in that the 300 or so 1299's sold in the UK in 2015 have all been run at a controlled level and any mass reoccurring faults should show up in a number of bikes.
People get far to worried about run in. Pussy footing it around will end up with less power. Sure stay under 6000 rpm but you should be giving it some beans once it's done a hundred or two to get the best compression results. Bought mine on a Monday, 600 miles service on thursday, off to Southern Italy on Friday Got it dyno'd on the way back and it was a very respectable figure.
Just run my 899 in, 600 (620) service last Wednesday, the dealers an 80 mile round trip so I donned my Rukka gear, way way to warm and didn't see a drop of rain despite some very angry looking skies! The 620 number is for the service light as it doesn't activate until around that figure and the dealer cannot reset the light if it's not been activated
I'm up to 330 miles with no plans for adding any significant mileage over the next couple of months. :-(
I commuted into work in London on the 1199 today. Going to do a lunch time swap with my mates Aprilia Tuono as I'm considering trading in the KTM in the new year
lol that really tickled me took me 17 minutes to get to work this morning, normally takes 40ish. Makes me wonder where all these people come from the rest of the year, it cant all be school runs. If you own a bike and youre not out on it today you need to re-evaluate :tearsofjoy:
I had a little chuckle at that too I tend to run mine in the garage with the door open as that makes it seem even louder Re traffic - a lot of people would've finished work last Friday Nice sunny day here, so I'm out on my bike too But greasy for my Ducati though, so triumph tiger time today into the Cotswolds for coffee and cake
I seriously considering riding in this morning. Just the effort involved in pulling the girl out that put me off. Great weather for it though!
The 20 miles is because the service light is actually at 1k kilometre, which is 625 miles. That's what I was told anyway.
Definitely not one long ride, the purpose of the running in is also to allow the engine to go through heat cycles, from cold to optimum temp and back to Cold to allow the different surfaces to mate properly or interference fits to settle. I would say 4x 125 mile rides would be perfect, and then a 100 miles with more revs on it. But honestly everyone will have a different opinion!!! For example someone will come along and say 'well they run in race bikes on dyno's' but they also rebuild those every meeting and it doesn't matter if they burn oil because they want the engine as loose as possible. So u see there are lots of theories....
