Hi guys, I've imported a 1098 Tricolore from Italy and done a search on here re Type Approval, but can't find what I'm looking for - has anyone been through this? I've sent off applications to for registration to DVLA twice now and they have rejected and are asking for a Type Approval. Ducati UK say they only deal with UK bikes so I'm stuck. The only option seems to be to contact Ducati direct which I am not lookong forward to. I can't believe that no one has done this before?! Do I really have to get them to test the bike via DVSA? Any help appreciated.
Google SVA. Unless things have changed the single vehicle approval process isn't complicated, just onerous. Andy
I imported a second hand 748 from France back in 1998. All I had to do was give the French documents to the local DVLA office, pay 25 quid and they got me a UK registration. It was very easy. Have things changed now?
I gave all the Italian documents, MOT, cheques for registration and they are still asking for a Type Approval doc. I am dreading having to go direct to Ducati. The only other option seems via MVSA which means paying around £100 for them to test it individually. The bike is UK spec, square cut off on lights, kph/mph at the touch of a button. The thing spent the first years of its life in Italy, that is it. There's no difference between UK and Italian spec bikes.
Mail Ducati Italy and they will respond after the Hols, they usually respond in a day, but they will come back to a backlog of mails so may take a few days. [email protected]
Can't do anything now until 4th January but I can ask a few questions. Not sure that there is any difference in UK/EU spec and I'm certain the approval documentation I've had is actually in Italian which makes no sense of the DVLA response although there is nothing new there. Andy
Hi PTG, i imported a 999 from germany 3 months ago and this is what you need. certiicato di conformita ce.
Hi Bazzer Did they also insist on an engineer/specialist letter to confirm speedo was converted to mph? also did C.O.C. convince DVLA as regards exhaust emissions?
Slightly different circumstances but I wanted to get my KTM road registered so I could do some green laning, it had never been registered before. Spoke to the DVLA and had to take it to one of their centres just off the M1 near Ampthill from memory. The did a glorified MOT and issued it with a registration number, very straight forward. The only paperwork I needed in order to get the correct age related plate was the year of manufacture from KTM.
What they are calling a type approval is indeed a "European Certificate of Conformity". You should get that from Ducati Italy as that is the market that the bike was supplied to. This system is now Europe wide. As for the speedo and headlight (which will be a flat dip anyway), a dealer attestation should suffice.
Fantastic! The letter DVLA sent me back specifically asks for 'Type Approval', so I'm assuming the C.O.C. is a form of type approval?
Type approval is an old term that was used before Europe introduced the CofC. Both will prove that the vehicle is approved for use on European (including the UK) roads.
Thanks Bob T - I just reread your post immediately before mine where you already explain that! Must be all the mulled wine lol! Thanks again, I felt like I was hitting my head against a brick wall before speaking to you guys!
It's worth having a look at my experience with the dvla. Steve http://ducatiforum.co.uk/threads/registering-an-old-unregistered-bike.36852/
