Battery discharges itself after 3 weeks on 900 ss ie

  1. Hello Friends

With a new battery and a new regulator, it just blew, what can be wrong if the battery looses its power after 3 weeks?
    It´s a Ducati 900 ss ie from 1998, and i just bought it.:frown:

    Many regards Peter

  2. Sounds like something is draining the battery, does it have an alarm fitted?
    Do you have an ammeter?

  3. I have no alarm. The dealer told me that it is the ECU that uses some power over time, but i don´t think he is right.
    And i own a multimeter.

  4. Time to check for a drain then

  5. If you don't have an alarm fitted, with the ignition key in the off position there should be no current drain.

Acid test, if you suspect that there is some drain is to connect a milliamp- meter in between one of the disconnected battery terminals and the relevant cable.

Just because it's a new battery doesn't mean it perfect- could conceivably be faulty!

  6. Why don't you disconnect the battery and see if it goes flat simples ....

  7. +1 on the above first step to see if the battery is ok.

if it discharges when detached, then the battery is faulty. If it doesn't, then check for current drain over time while switched off and connected with ammeter in series.

Then it will be a case of slowly connecting the ammeter in series with specific components to see what is taking the current.

othe thing is to check for the quality of connection and terminations, as these often exaggerate lots of problems, e.g. If the battery is just a little suspect, then high resistance contacts or terminations will exacerbate the issues.

  8. Peter, you don't say if the bike is being used during the three weeks or whether it is just parked up. If its the latter you may need to start pulling connectors and relays on the main power supply side of the loom. You can get gradual current drain with moisture in connectors and relays. The recent reg failure may be an indicator of a partial short somewhere which ought to be obvious with overheated wire insulation. If you have a meter you can easily check whether the bike is drawing current with the ignition off by disconnecting the battery + cable and putting an ammeter between the + battery post and the disconnected battery cable lug.

  9. Thanks for your advice. The bike is at the dealer where i bought it, because the Regulator Rectifier burnt off.
I don´t think i can get them to recocnize the problem. They say its the ECU and that is perfectly natural.
When i get the bike back in 5 month, i will try to fix it, otherwise i wil get back to your all.

    Kind regards Peter Rasmussen
