You are buying a second hand bike. If you get hold of last years MCN you will have a detailed History of it's early life not something you get with most second hand bikes It will have been ridden properly. It's unlikely to have had a life of short runs down to the local bike hangout half a days posing and a short ride back or started in the garage for 10 minutes to drool over. It will be as good as any other 2nd hand Panigale and probably better
Every s/h bike is a risk to a point. I wonder how many 899s are being used as roadbikes that have been raced?
Having seen how they look after the press fleet at Silverstone I would buy one over an ex demo any day! They have the best technicians in the country looking after them and they look after them like they where their own bikes, plus the journalists look after them like they where their own bikes as well, probably better than most of us look after our own bikes, if they didn't Ducati wouldn't lend them another
Lets be honest, as its already been said, they are all built for it, and if they are going to go bang, they were anyway. In that case its better they go bang, or have problems before they go on sale, so only the fittest survive as it were. However, for some, the thought of your pride and joy been thrashed before you owned it, is not an appealing proposition. For those people, only a new bike will satisfy, sometimes buying lower spec for the safety net of a new machine. And no, I didnt copy and paste that.
This is just my opinion. I buy second hand. I research the previous owner as much if not more so than the bike in front of me. You can never be sure of a bikes condition or history simply by looking at it and checking the service history. Just because it's got new tyres and shiny fairings and meticulous service record doesn't mean it hasn't been abused. The internet is your friend here, check out the previous owner. Facebook is usually a good place to start and is also the downfall of many. You may have been told the bike has been used only for gentle Sunday rides out, but online people are keen to share all their heroics and spills. Even on here I've seen people trip themselves up, posting about constant problematic bikes that seem to have no resolve. Then same bike appears on eBay advertised as never missing a beat. You can be lucky or unlucky it's true to say but sometimes a bit of background research can steer your luck in right direction.
Just to update the thread. I went to see the bike today and it in better condition that I remember it. The scratch on the tail will be gone because they are replacing the tail unit completely with the demo bike. Fairing misaligned is very minor and present on a brand new bike also. Nevertheless, they said that they will remove them completely and double check while they fit the new R&G protectors (sorry, I just don't trust myself yet) Service will be carried out and the bike has brand new supercorsas on. Wish it had Akros or Termis but we cant have everything... well.... not yet anyhow. Will pick it up on Saturday. Pictures will follow
You're having a laugh aren't you ? Journalists certainly don't treat the bikes well other than to not scratch them and ruin photos I'm sure there's maybe some that do, but the ones I've seen with both bikes and cars treat them badly
